I'll assume you meant to say "most who reviewed". This is a great standalone router. I do agree with the rest that you've said. However, in case people do not follow my link above and read the more detailed comments, I'll briefly state my issue with this router here:

Do NOT buy this router if you need AiMesh capabilities. It absolutely does not work as an AiMesh router even though it claims to. I had two of these at the same time to make sure I didn't get a faulty unit. They both refused to connect to any of my other Asus AiMesh routers. Yes I had the latest firmware, yes I tried Merlin, yes I called Asus and spent 4 hours on the phone with their tech support to no avail. They tried everything and came to a dead-end. This was less than 3 months ago. As long as you don't use AiMesh, it's fine, but it's a huge feature to pay for and not be able to use.

I can strongly recommend this over most routers at this price range (AX or not). Just keep channel freq on 20/40/80mhz bonding.

Using 160mhz on this router disables half the radio down to 2x2 and will tank functional range. I'm convinced the people who "reviewed" this router are idiots.

Should generally out perform most of the 2x2 AX stuff at range (5G). There will be outlier situations (environmental factors/channel use/interference) where an intel AX2XX card + entry AX does better, but not often, especially @ 30+ FT between walls.

The "dual core" CPU is better than the entry "tri/quad core" SoCs broadcom sells. This is basically a top end last gen broadcom chip with 2 cores disabled. (BCM4906)

Gen 2 AX hardware is slowly being released. I think this could be a good stop gap for someone looking for a router thats good enough, but not all in at 300+ USD for newer (4912 + 6715) designs. IE: GT-AX6000

I meant some of the independent reviewers that don't know left from right when testing hardware.

I never really used wireless "AI mesh" but the wired backhaul works fine.

Edit: I also need to clarify. 160mhz on this router forces the 4x4 radio into 2x2 + 2x2 TX config. It's not quite 2x2 in a traditional sense, but an 80mhz client (even if AX) won't see the second 2x2 broadcast. Throughput goes to shit on something like a M1 Macbook (80mhz AX)

Just a weird side effect of the older Wave 2 Radios. Not Broadcom exclusive either..Also happens on Qualcomm.

WiFi 5 is 2014 technology. Trying to get a "gaming router" just seems contradictory when WiFi 6 has many more bells and whistles for better performance and future proofing.

What bells and whistles? Most of the promised features aren't functional in real world scenarios. AX client adoption is also abysmal.

Anyway, this is a 4x4 AC Wave 2 (2016 hardware design) router.. Entry 2x2 AX is weaker, especially if you have a ton of AC clients (Which is likely). You're going to have to spend 2x the money to get the AX equivalent. IE: AX86S which is $200 on Amazon right now.

For $100-110 bucks, this is a nice router. It actually out performs my AXE11000 on unii-3 control 161 in a specific room, but thats subjective to my environment.

Edit: Gen 2 AX is looking good, but this is a nice stop gap vs current market.. You'll be pressed to find something better at this price point.

Noob here: I'm seeing quite a few bad reviews complaining about 2.4 completely going out and ASUS being ASUS for warranty support…
This does seem like a good stop gap for me but the reason I need a router in the first place is that my TP-Link just died after 1 year. trying to not have that happen again…

Any thoughts?

I would take a AX over an AC any day of the week, especially since TP-Link AX55 has been as cheap as $90.

Buying AC gear this late in the game is a joke no matter how technical you want to get with it.

As for benefits there are passive benefits such as better 2.4ghz performance cause of the better radios for one.

Yes I will agree other features like OFDMA are still a work in progress and vary greatly from router to router.

Was the problem with all AI Mesh features or just wireless backhaul?

Both identical units refused to be put into AiMesh router mode and connect to any of my AiMesh units. They would act as nodes, but not routers. Aside from this crucial feature, they worked just fine.

Edit: even when hardwired together, they refused to mesh if that helps.

Does anyone know if the "Triple Level Game Acceleration" thing is actually doing anything on the unit (GT-AC2900) in this post? I would be interested to know if these features actually help with gaming in terms of ping or latency.

Is this router an upgrade from Asus AC68U ? Ring Camera has problem connecting to router because of the wall even though only few feet away.

I have a 160mhz WiFi card in my HP elitebook and I've noticed my speed and range is horrible. I have an ASUS WiFi 6 router but I set the mhz range to a much lower 20/40 range. I live in a neighborhood of 7 other WiFi routers, crazy traffic here. I'm changing out that WiFi card for something older but better
