I've had and loved a couple of the previous versions of these, getting near daily use. Not sure why they chose to make these non-foldable, but that might be a deal breaker for those who count on being able to travel with a compact carrying case.

Feels like the msrp is overpriced for these.
It is. The XM4's were $350 MSRP and folded, while the XM5's are $400 and dont and the XM4's had a more comfortable headband. Sony also has been really bad about just doing incremental improvements when they need to add stuff like USB-C data+charging, allow microphone use when wired and either add the new low latency BT codec, Aptx or wifi because the lag and mic quality is terrible on PC.
The competition surpassed Sony in features, and are catching up in ANC.
I would not recommend these if you are looking for noise cancellation as it is a step backwards compared to the previous models. If you move your head or swallow the noise cancellation turns off because it's adaptive it was a much noisier plane ride using these men with my xm3s.
Ended up getting the Bose QC45s during Prime day from the Bose website ($229 + 10% CB). Hard to justify getting these for $300+ when they've been reviewed to fall short to its own previous models (XM3 and XM4). I love the look but bang for buck, I think the Bose QC45 or XM4 for low $200s is the better purchase.

I assume this is part of the new features being introduced with the latest Sony earbuds/headsets. I had the XM4 earbuds and indeed if you coughed, sneezed, or whatever, it cuts off the ANC as you said... it's quite annoying. But in any case, you can definitely turn this off in the settings. That being said, you're still paying for a feature you won't be using.
I still have and use daily their XM3s. They're fantastic in almost every way (I'm no audiophile but I can definitely tell they sound way better than other cheaper headsets I own). The bluetooth version is old and doesn't support multipairing, so that's definitely something I'd love to have. These might be worth the upgrade.

There was not an option to turn off adaptive NC on the XM5's. I emailed Sony about it (as did a lot of other people from what I saw on Reddit) and they could not say whether or not there would be a firmware update to fix that. So, back they went. I would suggest purchasing from someplace you can demo and return if need be. Unfortunately for me, I sold my XM3's before receiving the XM5's as I bought into all the great reviews. I ended up having to purchase a pair on ebay and at the end of the day got a good deal as they were never used and on the old firmware 2.0.0 which I will not update. The ANC is night and day between the XM3 and 5. I can't speak for the XM4 though. I do have pair of those in a sealed box still as I have read XM3's are slightly better on ANC.
Saying that, sound is subjective, so someone else's experience may be better than mine.
This is just incorrect. You can definitely turn off adaptive noise cancelling in the Sony Headphones app.
You do not have full control of ANC on the XM5's. Look it up and you will see. I know. I had them. You can turn it off, but you don't have the options like in the XM3 where it is on all the time. It will only allow you to use adaptive NC or ambient. It may be changed in a firmware update but as of now those were the options. So, totally off, Adaptive NC or ambient. Saying that, I returned mine a month ago so maybe there has been a fix since then. https://www.reddit.com/r/SonyHead...nc_on_xm5/

That's too bad. I was looking forward to getting these and probably still will if they fix the issue.

You say "look it up" but provide no information, and your being very unclear with your language, because your taking about "adaptive NC", which is not a setting in the app. Then you link to a Reddit post that is referencing ANC optimization, which is presumably something else. It seems like you just don't know how to navigate the app, because you can 100% turn off adaptive sound control in the "status" section of the Sony app as seen here: https://www.theverge.com/23159461...20default.
