Each to their own. I bought those red dispensers last time on sale and have had nothing but a nightmare using them. A tape gun, I can use no problem and much prefer!
Can't comment on the price vs historical price, etc.. but the amount of time that having a packing tape gun has saved me over the years, has probably paid for itself 100s of times over

The 3M tape guns are trash. Tape gets stuck to it, and is a shipping nightmare. Made that mistake one too many times at Home Depot.
The little one you linked works well for small jobs.

You're getting plenty of hate, but I completely agree with you. I've used tape guns at work many many times. Ripping/cutting the tape is the problem. WAY easier with the red dispenser.

All tape dispensers are terrible to use. I've used like 10 brands and I hate all of them.
You can get much cheaper tape though. Copped an 8 pack of clear tape for $2 at my local HomeGoods
As someone who ships a lot of boxes of all sizes, the handheld tape guns (I like the red 3M one with foam grip ... think I got it at Sam's Club) are great for large boxes. But if you're shipping small boxes, this heavy-duty commercial quality Marsh bench tape dispenser[amazon.com] is great and will last you a lifetime, and never dent or break if you drop it. It's made from a solid 3+ lb piece of steel and stays put when you pull tape off with one hand. Although it is OOS at Amazon right now, if you can find it at another store, I highly recommend it for small packages. Can be used with other types of tape, too.
It is very similar but slightly different. The Uline one is awesome but I am not sure they are handing this one out for free. Gotta love the "Top Gun" and "Truly the Cadillac of tape dispensers" on the site. This one is a combination of the 2" and 3" versions. I have clearly gone way too deep into this analysis.

This thing sucks. It doesn't cut tape. I sharpened the blade. I loosened the blade screws because apparently it's supposed to move but I didn't think it was moving at all. I increased the tension to the max. I have to pull ridiculously hard to the point where I have to hold the box with one hand to prevent it from flying off the table or I have to angle the tape gun in order for it to cut the tape, which ruins the tape. Should have tested it sooner so I could return this POS. never imagined something as simple as a tape gun could suck this much.
