The 10th gen (2018) is on Woot for $15 more, and is waterproof. https://www.woot.com/offers/kindl...0th-gen-23
eBooks are 5 MB each or less. 802.11n supports up to 300Mbps (aka 37.5 MB/S), or more conservatively 150Mpbs (aka 18.75 MB/s). This thing has 4 GB of storage, however 1.5 GB of that is the OS. Therefore, you have 2.5 GB of book storage, at 5 MB or less each, that's 500 books. Even assuming 150Mpbs speeds, you could download all 500 books this thing could hold in under 5 minutes.

I guess my point is: There're legitimate complaints to be made on this 2015 device (LED unevenness, battery lifecycle/age, storage space, waterproofing, etc). This isn't one of them, and kind of makes me wonder if you've never used an eBook reader before?

This is a great deal. I am still rocking a 7th gen and use it more often than the 8th gen that I also have. Yes the 8th is better, but not enough that I ever bothered to move over to it.

I got the 8th gen last week and it seems to be slower than my 7th gen.

I think you mean 10th gen 2018 version?

Weird! I did find the 10th gen faster than the 7th, but not enough to matter. I wonder how the new 11 gen 2021 units compare for speed.

7 year old device. Are they worth anything, or are you just buying Bezo's garbage? $30 isn't much though.

Wifey has one and she has never complained about it. Page speed is a little slow but it's way more convenient than lugging around several books for vacation and the battery lasts near forever.

Trade in is $5 + 20% off a new Kindle. If you go ads free that's like $27 back. Might eventually be a money maker if there's a sale.

Picked one up Prime Day to replace my non-paperwhite. The resolution is much better and the light makes it much more usable. Do not need the waterproofness of the newest gen.

I just upgraded to the current gen paperwhite from this one.

Biggest difference is that the screen is larger on the new one, and page loads are faster (due to partial screen refreshes, I think).

The new one also can do Audible audiobooks, can adjust the backlight warmth, has waterproofing, and has USB-C for charging (and if you get the Signature edition, it has wireless charging).

Overall, I highly recommend the new one, but nothing was wrong with the old one.

I purchased 2 from last deal. Some sign of uses. One of them has brighter screen than the other at all brightness level. Do you guys know if it is normal? Does that mean the brighter screen one is newer? I am debating which to keep.
