The See for Yourself Kit is an easy, worry-free way to try Mint Mobile out before committing to one of our phone plans.
For just $5, we'll send you a SIM card loaded with a trial plan. You'll download our free Mint Mobile app to activate the SIM and test Mint where you live, work, and play without affecting your current service.
Trial plan includes 250MB of 4G LTE data, 250 text messages, and 250 minutes of talk—all of which is good for 7 days after activation.
Once you know we're a match, it's time to choose the full Mint Mobile plan that's right for you! You'll keep the SIM card in your phone and either stick with the new number we give you during the trial, or bring your own, up to you.
We'll even credit the $5 cost back when you upgrade your trial plan to a full plan right in our app, which means you get premium wireless service for just $15/month AND the credit—score!

What I most wanted to test was data. If you run a speed test (for example from speedtest.net) you will burn ALL of your trial data and the trial will end automatically. At least that was my experience. I didn't realize that speedtest.net took so much data to run. I also didn't realize that once you hit the limit on data the trial for voice and text would also immediately end.
I've been pretty happy with Mint over the past 7 months but this was pretty lame. I couldn't find a good way to test my data speed without committing to them. Maybe this has been fixed since I tried them out.
Well we hit the 4GB data limits at least 3 times but all within a 2-3 days of the end of the month cycle. I am not sure but I think T-Mobile doesn't include data usage for certain apps that we used which made it seemed we used less than what we actually did, so something to consider when switching.
Overall we are happy with their service and saving quite a bit. Even got some credits for "referring" my wife to Mint.
If you're looking for cheap port-out options - Ting sims available at Best Buy are at $1; includes $30 credit. Sign up on the flex plan at $10 and don't use data; Activate when required and port out asap. Note that Ting does require a credit card at activation.
Boost also has a promotional $1 offer for a 1 month plan; I haven't tried it.
GV numbers are "free" to sign up (as long as you have a verification number); you'll have to pay $3 to port out.

is that still a cheapest option to get a number to port out?

Around 24 to 48 hours after sign up, the included $30 credit will be added to your account. If you port out BEFORE this is added; you'll miss out on the addition, and may be charged. OTOH - once the credit is added; you can port out and your credit card shouldn't be charged.
Ting $1 (on T-mo) and Boost $1 trial (on AT&T) are the cheapest I know; I haven't seen any free offers, and $1 is the lowest after that..
