Just a word of warning with this ...

What I most wanted to test was data. If you run a speed test (for example from speedtest.net) you will burn ALL of your trial data and the trial will end automatically. At least that was my experience. I didn't realize that speedtest.net took so much data to run. I also didn't realize that once you hit the limit on data the trial for voice and text would also immediately end.

I've been pretty happy with Mint over the past 7 months but this was pretty lame. I couldn't find a good way to test my data speed without committing to them. Maybe this has been fixed since I tried them out.

Just wanted to share our experience. We have been with Mint Mobile for about 4 months now and we are happy with them. One reason we decided to switch was because when we were with T-Mobile (unlimited data plans) it showed us barely using 2GB each month on average since we started working remotely. It seemed reasonable to switch to Mint as we knew we had good coverage and could save money and be okay with their cheapest data plan.

Well we hit the 4GB data limits at least 3 times but all within a 2-3 days of the end of the month cycle. I am not sure but I think T-Mobile doesn't include data usage for certain apps that we used which made it seemed we used less than what we actually did, so something to consider when switching.

Overall we are happy with their service and saving quite a bit. Even got some credits for "referring" my wife to Mint.

Mint has been decent in my experience, but when my 6-month plan (from the buy 3 get 3 free promo late last year) runs out, I'm switching to US Mobile, which offers priority data on Verizon (you need to have a 5G device) and more flexibility - you pay month-to-month and can change plans if your needs change.

No. You can't port out the trial number; you can either sign up for the 3 month plan ($45) or let it expire.

If you're looking for cheap port-out options - Ting sims available at Best Buy are at $1; includes $30 credit. Sign up on the flex plan at $10 and don't use data; Activate when required and port out asap. Note that Ting does require a credit card at activation.

Boost also has a promotional $1 offer for a 1 month plan; I haven't tried it.

GV numbers are "free" to sign up (as long as you have a verification number); you'll have to pay $3 to port out.

when you signup for $10 ting flex plan, do you have to pay $10?
is that still a cheapest option to get a number to port out?

When you activate a Ting sim, you select a plan; the $10 flex plan is the cheapest; extra charge for any data, and there are taxes and fees extra.

Around 24 to 48 hours after sign up, the included $30 credit will be added to your account. If you port out BEFORE this is added; you'll miss out on the addition, and may be charged. OTOH - once the credit is added; you can port out and your credit card shouldn't be charged.

Ting $1 (on T-mo) and Boost $1 trial (on AT&T) are the cheapest I know; I haven't seen any free offers, and $1 is the lowest after that..
