It's long but trust me, this is the short version.

Essentially, it boiled down to Google not showing my phone as activated. They shipped it to me, I ported my number, they turned it on, I used it and they charged me for Fi's service. BUT they didn't start the clock on the 24 months. After the first month, it still showed that I had 24 months remaining. After the second month, it still showed that I had 24 months left. This continued for a total of 6 months. I notified Google of the issue after the 1st month. Was assured that it would be corrected. This process was repeated with each billing cycle. Phone calls, emails, and chats with support. All to no avail.

In month 5 I get an email from Google telling me that my subscription will be canceled shortly if I do not activate my phone. Ironically, the email suggests that if I have any further questions that I should go out to a USER support group for help. Yeah - I'm sure Joe, a random forum user and non-Google employee will fix my activation issue on the Google servers. Anyway, after that email was sent I contacted support again. They assured me that this wasn't a problem. My account was flagged as being worked on. No adverse action would be taken.

In month 6 I get an email from Google telling me that my Google Pay account has been charged the $450 full price of the 5a less the $60 I have paid towards the device over the past 6 months. My last call to support was to tell them to please cancel my Fi service and notify them that I will never, ever, ever do business with Fi again.

So ... how did this hurt me? First, at the time I could have bought the phone outright for $450 (which is what I ultimately paid). However, I could have gotten free Pixel Buds ($100 value) + 3 months of Fi unlimited ($210 value). I missed both of those by choosing the subscription. I wasted at least 10 hours and a whole lot of aggravation dealing with ineptitude. Google employs some of the most brilliant engineers in the world and they can't figure out why my clearly active phone/account are showing not activated? So frustrating.

Anyway, that's the short version. There's a bunch of stuff I'm leaving out to keep it kind of brief. On a side note, I love the Pixel 5a. In my household, we've had the Galaxy Nexus, 4, and 7. The Pixel 2, 3a, 4XL, 5a (and we just pre-ordered the 6a through the trade-in program). I generally love Google phones (and the best tablet ever created - the Nexus 7). However, their mobile company is the worst. Both from a customer service perspective and their ability to troubleshoot issues.

Is this available for current Fi subscribers? It looks like it, but I haven't seen anything explicit.

At least from the Google Fi app (while on my Pixel 4a), I was able to go through the screens to get a new Pixel 6a on subscription (for $10 per month + taxes). I didn't complete the purchase yet though, I only got to the screen where they said they would "run a final credit check".
I've been a Google Fi member for about 2+ years now. I'm just hesitating whether or not to wait for the Pixel 7.

I'm actually surprised more people don't want to be on Google Fi, especially if you have/need 3 or more lines on the Simply Unlimited. Much better speeds than Visible (I know low priority Verizon is the reason), equally as fast as T-Mobile was, and much cheaper than most anything else for the amount of data.

You would need to have at least three lines on Google Fi to match the $25 / month you get from Visible. Visible is imo the best plan out there for people who need an individual plan or don't have a need for three lines. Also Visible has the best cellular coverage in general due to it being on Verizon's network.

I think the big selling point of Fi is the international coverage. Domestically, the prices aren't great unless you have at least 3 lines, 4 being optimal. And if you do per gig plan, you can get sim cards for LTE on other devices and share the data pool.

Thinking I may bite, I keep doing Fi promos and port out but keeping one line for almost a year now for just travel purpose and so far it has been great. Good enough to work remotely in most places I traveled globally and I only use by the gig since it is not very data intensive and if hotel has wifi I use that instead. My main metro plan is older 4 lines for $100 unlimited and wifi calling abroad. If Fi could do something like that I would switch all my numbers in heart beat lol.

Another thing I hate with Fi is taxes compared to Visible or US Mobile. I have both Visible and US Mobile after switching from Fi and I can say US Mobile has awesome plans and much better speeds compared to Visible. Also per gig plans on US Mobile cost 2$ per gig compared to Fi's 10$. US Mobile has recently introduced international roaming and has wifi calling so I am hoping I am not going to miss Fi's international capabilities much.

Subscription seems like a no brainer for Fi customers willing to stick with the phone for 2 years. Phone is yours after 2 years and the option to continue or leave the subscription at that point. You protect the device from serious damage.

I have visible and have been on and off google fi for various deals over the years. Visible is great on some phones, seemingly terrible with others for some reason, but the simplicity of the pricing is what I like. I will probably switch to Fi when my kids are a little older. I always found Fi to have better coverage even though visible uses verizon, at least in Southeast PA. Now that they have made their pricing more competitive, Fi is really in the mix.

Wife was on Visible with 13 pro purchased from them. We live in Los Angeles and the coverage was terrible. She wouldn't get signal in places where she had with T-Mobile before. Finally gave up and left.

Truth is I can just put the sim card in the 4g modem that is what is the original plan was but i found phone to be better than just hotspot for redundancy reasons while traveling. So smaller 2nd phone is good option and data sim in other device so you are covered while abroad. I keep phone and router in my hotel safe while walking about with another phone.
