It's typical scare tactics... just means you will lose access after your subscription expires. You can safely turn off recurring billing at any time.

Bought the codes through eneba, which by the way, allows you to buy them all in one transaction so your credit card provider's fraud alert doesn't get triggered by the repeat activity.

I went ahead and bought 9 of the 3-month codes for around $6 each (listed at $5-ish each plus service fee, plus I paid a few cents more than the absolute lowest available price to go with a high volume/highly rated seller).

Make sure that when you're redeeming the very last code at Microsoft that you turn off the free-month offer button, since that would push you over the 36-month mark.

After converting to Ultimate for $14.99 (my sub had expired on July 4th and didn't want to start a new one just to save the $14) ... I immediately turned off recurring billing again with no issues.

All in all, I got 36 months for $68.xx bucks, and also used Discover through Paypal which should get me another 5% back. Sliiick!

i purchased 3 years of Gold subscription and now I'm not able to upgrade to Ultimate, I get an error "you currently have a subscription from a different region" , any idea how to fix?

As the OP states, you need to buy 4. They are actually 2 x three months codes, so you will get a total of 8 codes.

You can buy a three month code here, to make it a total of 9 codes.

If you go to the 36 month, you can't add the extra free month either as it will tell you that you are past maximum time. So you pay a couple bucks more to max out but still great price.

If you're trying to purchase more than one code per transaction it won't work. Re-read the instructions for clarification.
