Just FYI, 90%+ of all box fan failures is due to a protective fuse in the fan being blown. If you ever had one of your fans "just suddenly stopped working", this is probably the reason.

If a fuse is blown, you should always find out -why- before you try to do a repair.

Sometimes these fuses can pop for no obvious reason, other times is extremely obvious and potentially life-saving.

It might seem annoying if it happens to you but this is a good thing, because the fuse prevents damage to the motor from a current spike or a potential fire from overheating due to a bearing failure.

Segway into the next leading cause; bearing failure, where the part of the motor that helps the fan rotor turn smoothly and easily has broken( and now causes resistance and actually acts like a brake on the motor.) If the fan makes a rasping or a repetitive clicking sound, seems to struggle to slowly start rotating when you turn on the power and seems to quickly stop spinning when the power is turned off, this is a pretty sure sign that the bearing has failed. If you're using any fan that has any of those problems, you should stop using it because it needs to be repaired or replaced asap.

Operation of any motor with bad bearings can be dangerous because it can cause permanent damage to the motor, start a fire due to prolonged friction, or possibly an electrical fire in the fan motor winding because of excessive current. (And that's what pops a fuse) if you're thinking about repairing a fan, always check to see if the fan blade spins freely before you do anything else.

If a fan doesn't seem to work, and the fan blade doesn't turn easily or has rasp, these cheap fans aren't worth the time trouble to try to repair for most people.

If the blade turns easily and the cord and switch seem fine without any other apparent damage to the fan, it's almost certainly a blown fuse.

Some hobbyists might be tempted to just try to bypass the fuse altogether; Don't. Fuses and breakers are there to keep you from dying, not to make you buy another fan.

You can buy replacement fuses online for about 35 to 50 cents each, depending on the amperage requirements. Some fan fuses are wired in-line near the motor, so you may have to clip out the hardwired fuse. I would recommend upgrading it to a fuse holder so that you can easily replace blown fuses in the future in just a couple of seconds. Some fans have a fuse holder that is built into their plug for easy replacement, much like some Christmas lights.

Some manufacturers will even have information in their user manual about how to replace a blown fuse, or may have a service manual available online that will show you the writing diagram and exact location of the fuse. YMMV.

Use a filter with 4-5" depth. Or make a Corsi-Rosenthal cube(aka 4-5 1" merv 13 filters arranged into a box shape). Single 1" filter will burn out your fan faster.
They have the high velocity 20" version for $60 and it's much stronger and more durable.

The price for this is great though. I use the 20" box fans with a 20 20x1 MERV11 air filter mounted to the rear of it, and it makes a very effective, and inexpensive air filter . (Some people even make 3d printed brackets)

Agreed. I liked using a 20x20x1 merv 8 filter on a box fan over the winix hepa filter from Costco. I used to feel the difference when walking into the house after 6-8 hours of running. I don't experience that with the winix.

I just picked one up today, it is not loud. It's just as loud as the regular Lasko ones and it puts about a bit more air.

Does any one know if the fan blades are metal? Or plastic.

I never did hepa due to the fans lack of pull (They claim 2000cfm on high... I definitely didn't see a 2k cfm on mine lol. Buy I'd assume in optimal situation, and a perfect pitch/balance blade, it might do 2k?) A merv 11 20x20x1 cuts the flow in half (at least) So I always assume a hepa would be more than it could handle? But I'm unfamiliar with the particular filter you mentioned.

These look suspiciously like the same lasko fans that sell regular price Walmart for $20. I'm sitting in front of one as I'm typing this.

I wouldn't use it past the first setting indoors, even that would probably be loud enough to annoy some people. I just use them for cooling in the garage.

That filter clogs quickly (at least in my dusty environment), and severely limits airflow to the point where I could barely feel the fan after about 2 months.

I am also. I put it on a $5 smart plug to turn on/off with Alexa

This is the hepa filter I'm talking about

https://slickdeals.net/share/android_app/fp/732328

I thought it would be better with a hepa filter with a charcoal prefilter but I don't notice any difference in air quality on Turbo speed all day in the way I did with the box fan and a merv 8 filter. I'm going back to the box fan once I burn they all the filters on the Winix

Agreed. Made one myself about 6 months while back. More cost effective and efficient than spending $200-400. Noise is definitely an issue tho. Better to run it at night and maybe on low during the day.
