Just FYI, 90%+ of all box fan failures is due to a protective fuse in the fan being blown. If you ever had one of your fans "just suddenly stopped working", this is probably the reason.
If a fuse is blown, you should always find out -why- before you try to do a repair.
Sometimes these fuses can pop for no obvious reason, other times is extremely obvious and potentially life-saving.
It might seem annoying if it happens to you but this is a good thing, because the fuse prevents damage to the motor from a current spike or a potential fire from overheating due to a bearing failure.
Segway into the next leading cause; bearing failure, where the part of the motor that helps the fan rotor turn smoothly and easily has broken( and now causes resistance and actually acts like a brake on the motor.) If the fan makes a rasping or a repetitive clicking sound, seems to struggle to slowly start rotating when you turn on the power and seems to quickly stop spinning when the power is turned off, this is a pretty sure sign that the bearing has failed. If you're using any fan that has any of those problems, you should stop using it because it needs to be repaired or replaced asap.

I thought so too... but after seeing smartleopards comment on a "Corsi-Rosenthal Box" I looked it up, and it sent my tinkering brain into OverDrive. That filter design with 1 box fan, and 4 filters making it a cube, blew me away!!!
It should basically prevent dust, and even virion from from passing while not losing much, if any, of the fans airflow.
I'm going to put one of these in every room. It'll be like the ISS lol.

Yeah it is. Depending on your use case you could put it in a different room to blow out the window and have the windows open in another section of the house to pull in air. I do this at night to cool down the house at night using a dual fan window fan.

That filter clogs quickly (at least in my dusty environment), and severely limits airflow to the point where I could barely feel the fan after about 2 months.
That means the fan with filter is working as intended! Better in the filter than in your lungs!
I also selected a high MERV 13 filter. Where I live I have to check the air quality index before I open the window. I use the fan and filter to blow the air into the room if the outside air is reasonably good.
You can also set up a smart plug with the fan and filter to run for X minutes before your bedtime.

I cannot believe how bad 2022 box fans are compared to my 10 year old one, the new ones seemed designed to last a year a throw away.
All my future fans will be DC motor, if you've never tried one it is 100% worth the extra dollars.
