Magnetic options are pretty good for finding drywall nails/screws, but whether or not those are centered in a stud (or even in a stud) depends on how careful the drywall installer was.

I've found that the multi-led stud finders like Franklin are pretty darn accurate for locating the edges, and thus the center, of the studs. Just do several passes from both directions, making marks as you go and the mid point of all the marks will be pretty darn close to the actual center of the stud.

I recently used this stud finder for some garage projects and I have to say it's the best one I've used so far. I'd found the previous model as I was cleaning out my garage. Totally forgot I bought it, guess it going back to Costco. 😁

I don't have this one in particular but this *style* with the many LEDs is definitely better than the old/original style of the point indicator. It is wider though, which might present some issues.

will buy if my nyc costco has them for $20
i'm sure i'll end up returning it because
my apt has 1" thick old plaster on wood studs
which most stud finders and magnets won't detect.
it's sort of like using a stud finder on cement board
which is also pointless.

update, i called in nyc about 7000500 and
they show none in stock anywhere around.

I have being using one by Zircon for 20 years which shows the edge of stud with one red beam. I was hoping this one can give a more accurate indication of the stub. I tried it at Costco on their dry-wall on stud demo and it was good. When I used it last week in the garage that has insulation, I cannot see a clear location of the stud. It does show the electricity wire. My Zircon one has two depth level of scanning that gives more more accurate indication. This one has no adjustment at all and is less accurate in marking the edge of stud.
