Seems like a decent deal, but screw these drives. I have a dead one and lost some work stuff I shouldn't have trusted on just the drive.

I feel ya pain..I bought myself a brand new WD 4TB portable drive..It started to crash when ever I plugged in to my PC..I lost some of my files..It's terrible, slow, and unreliable..I think WD is crap..

Over the years the warranty period for WD has shortened right?

Also their warranty handling process has deteriorated. I don't get a feeling this is a healthy company anymore. At least the hard drive part of the business. They don't have any particular differentiating expertise in the SSD market just relying on the brand name.

For now WD Red Plus and WD black hard drives are still worth buying new when discounted. Their external drive QC is concerning new or furbished.

Or maybe get a enterprise class drive and put it in an enclosure? I see those have a 5 year warranty.

If you can get them as a retail box not OEM so the warranty is honored for a decent price, sure. But typically they cost a premium over WD Red Plus (which are often on sale for a great price) and you have to add the enclosure cost and get a decent one.

Bought 4 of them to refresh the drives in my Synology DS420j. Got them in 3 days. Shucked all of the drives in a matter of minutes.

According to the model numbers, 3 were Red NAS drives, 1 was a Blue compute. All had NASWare 3.0 according to the drive label. Performance is the same basically for all of them. All had 0 hours in SMART.

Restored my NAS from a backup and running the long SMART test over the next few days. For $50 a drive, this is a great deal.

2 year warranty is through SquareTrade, of whom I have not dealt with.
