How many seasons can you realistically get out of this before it starts to decay?

No, that's just the color of the stain. Reviews talk about outdoor use, but it seems to be untreated wood, so susceptible to rot.

I was going to spray Thomson's waterseal all over it both inside and outside. Then, staple a black heavy duty plastic liner on the inside to further prevent rot and water damage. For bigger plants, I am going to stack one on top of the other after removing the bottom of the top planter. They easily popped out since only staples were used to hold them. Will this help them last longer?

How much is lumber now? I've built of these over the years, usually 2' x 4'. And some brackets and some screws. Easy peasy. And line the bottom with some weed blocker. But these look nice for a more finished look. I see $91 though. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Costw.../317231220

A lot of reviews stating poor construction. Might be why they are on clearance. I would reinforce the corners before filling them up just to be on the safe side.
