I just got a samsung sound bar for $700, with MSRP of $1300.
It def sounds absolutely awesome, but I agree that it is hard to justify over 1k for a soundbard. But keep in mind, there are many audiophiles out there.

Samsung HW-Q900A on slickdeals last month. Apparently there was an even better deal a few days later for a nearly-just-as-good soundbar with a tv for $800. Wish I got that one, but im still satisfied with the model I got.
I'd like to see what you can build out for that price. This price is pretty cheap considering that if you were to start from scratch with a discrete system, you'd still need to buy an AVR to power it.
Agreed, but it would be mid range to low end and buy all pieces on good sales. Mid range - decent sub $200-$300, receiver $400-$600, center $100-$200, fronts $400-$500 and rears for $200-$300

Audiophiles would not buy this. Not at this price especially, there are numerous better solutions for this price, I think. They would likely go with fewer "channels" with better quality.
