The only Amazon products I've owned is the fire stick. If anyone is familiar with these other smart devices, can you please recommend what I can use in a nursing home so that we can speak to my mother and she can see our faces? The device would have to be so easy where she does not even have to press anything to answer, similar to the way that I have her iPhone set up to automatically answer after 10 seconds on speakerphone. She has dementia, and extremely confused at times. There is a Wi-Fi network in the facility, so anything that works connected to the Wi-Fi would be great. Reps for advice, TIA.

This would work for your use case if you setup using the same amazon account on this device and the smartphone you want to call from. From the Alexa app on the smartphone, you can use the Drop In feature to this device and it will automatically start the camera and the audio via which you can communicate without requiring anyone to answer.

Yes. Definitely "Drop In" option can help connect to all echo devices on the same account. You may access the camera from anywhere. Make sure they are aware of it's privacy implications.

This should definitely work, as the other user said. You might consider getting the adjustable stand that they sell for these, though. It definitely simplifies positioning of the unit. If you would have her maintain the unit in a specific location without it ever needing to tilt up/down, then that's obviously entirely unnecessary. Regardless, it would work well for that use purpose.

Looks like best price per camelx3 but this is 1st gen and it looks like 2nd gen is much better.

The megapixels on the camera for 1st gen is 1MP, meanwhile for the 2nd gen it's 13MP.

Only significant difference is the camera. But other than that don't see much difference. Also best price was when Amazon ran promo of 2 for $100 3 years ago which is when I got mine. From what I have experienced, Alexa is superior in voice recognition and hence home automation integration purpose. While Google falls short in those categories a bit, it excels when it comes to asking random questions, basically googling, to get answers where Alexa is pretty mediocre. I also use my echo show as bluetooth speaker sometimes for my TV and it actually sounds great for it's size.

Adding "2nd Gen to title/post might earn more thumbs up.

Edit: I mistyped! I meant 1st Gen.

You mean thumbs down when it's not 2nd generation
