3.9 gallons....
The inside lift out basket can be inconvenient to remove since the lid must be lifted back completely, and the lid is on a spring mechanism. I just use my hand to lift back the lid when taking out the basket instead of the foot pedal.
but for a fact a regular grocery bag (the days before 10cents bags) would not work.
