It's easy to make your own. 3 part distilled water, 1 part vinegar and add 1 drop of Dawn per bottle. Another option is: 2 part sterile water, 1 part rubbing alcohol, 1 part vinegar and a drop of Dawn dishwashing soap. You may experiment with ratios of distilled water, rubbing alcohol and vinegar to equal parts. Make in bulk and save $

I don't know why SC Johnson/Windex is seemingly trying to hide the ingredients (maybe bc they don't want you making your own at home), but the clear version appears to use vinegar as opposed to ammonia. That said, it received 4.7 stars on Amazon with almost 14k reviews, and looks like 4.4 stars on Walmart.com, who was selling it for over $4 (yes this is a good deal at a little over $2), and Target had it around 4.7 stars as well. Overall, it looks like most everyone liked this ammonia-free version, and this is definitely a great price. Slickerdoodles does it again...

Biggest advantage is probably because ammonia damages window tint film.

But it probably doesn't work quite as well for cleaning glass as ammonia based.

In my experience ammonia based Windex leaves residue on automotive glass. I also tried this ammonia free version but this also leave some light film on windshield. I still have a bottle of this in my garage and use it once in a while. The handle sometimes is stuck in the pressed position.

Ammonia gets a bad rap. It's superior to vinegar for cleaning glass in most cases. Especially for nonpolar smudges like fingerprints and grease.

Home made windex:

9 parts rubbing alcohol
1 part 10% ammonia
Drop or two of dawn

Best surface cleaner Ive found, keep it away from polycarbonates like lexan tho

While it's easy to make home version, I think it's much easier to pay $2.60 and save the work of getting the material ready, measure, and mix. I don't think that I have all the materials available in my house.

Also if you're using something like this to clean granite countertops (if you're not all anal about using special granite cleaner) ammonia isn't particularly good for the granite. I've always used Sparkle which is effectively just a different brand of 'glass cleaner' that has no ammonia.

I haven't bothered to price compare since I buy it in bulk and refill the spray bottles.
