Be aware of the fine print. In exchange for the free thermostat, they get to remotely control the temperature of your thermostat during peak electric demand.

"…you agree to let LADWP to make brief, limited adjustments to your thermostat during times of peak electric demand."

FWIW, I've been letting my Chicago provider do this for about 12 years, with a $40 credit ($10/mo.) in the summer months. They only do it on the most brutal days and the blower stays running while they cycle the compressor to try to load-balance customers. Can't say I ever noticed, even though they text me when they are going to do it. So it's not like they just kill it for hours on end. Devil Angel

This offer actually doesn't require you to enroll in any programs that let LADWP control your AC. You can get the thermostat for $0 plus shipping and taxes as it combines:

That said, LADWP does have a program that you can enroll in to get a gift card for $125 plus $60 annually but enrolling in that program is optional and is not required to get the free Nest Thermostat.

LADWP is pretty good about this and not really cause for concern. They do it a couple times a month max and only for a few hours- often when I'm not even using it anyway.

Somehow it comes out to $51.25 - might be because I'm in an apartment? IDK.

Update: it's fixed now. Comes out to $22.

LADWP also has the AC Optimization program where you can work with an HVAC professional to perform maintenance to your system and install a Nest free of charge. When I did it, they replace the filters, added refrigerant and cleaned the coils.

I don't see this to be true. When clicking the link, the first page asks you if you're willing to allow LADWP to control your thermostat and you can not click continue until you check the box to agree.

It worked for me without enrolling into any energy saving program.

The pop up page asked my information (name, address, LADWP account number etc) to verify that I am LADWP customer. Once verified, the second page asked me to accept terms and conditions (not related to energy program enrollment). After that I was charged for 9.99 shipping fee and 12.xx sales tax.

I got this free last week from bge. I called for them to do a home energy assessment and they offered this for energy savings. So there's a good chance other areas offer this as well if you just call your electric co.

SCE (Southern California Edison) has the similar $75 rebate for smart thermostat. Some qualified thermostats are even cheaper than $75. The catch is that the thermostat must be installed and connected to the Internet to get rebate. Reselling for profit doesn't work. Probably LADWP offer is the same.
