The Shield's upscaling is far better than any other streaming box and probably better than higher end TV's solutions and no you cannot sideload.

The aTV is great because iTunes on it is fantastic quality all around while on other boxes you have to use Movies Anywhere to match the quality (and not all movies are on MA and you cannot rent things there)

Having said that I think the Shield is better because the overall freedom you get with the device. You can sideload, play almost any file, change the launcher if you want, can Cast to it (no AirPlay though which the aTV obviously has), and finally the upscaling is fantastic.

People are gonna say the Shield has ads on the main launcher, which I agree is straight up garbage, but Apple pushes their services on you so hard with their interface and people for some reason don't consider that as "having ads". At least with the shield you can change the launcher

My Samsung tv is older and UI is slow and doesn't have the recent apps. I tried using a firestick 4K for a year but it was non stop head aches with the remote losing connection. I got the Apple TV and it's been awesome. The remote stays connected, ui is responsive and it has a much better integration with iOS

What is this player's upscaling PIQ vs the NVIDIA Shield on 720/1080p media sources? Can this be sideloaded for apps? TIA.

There is no side loading.
You get the apple ecosystem and that's it

General consensus is no, unless you want to load a ton of games onto it. So for most people, nope.

I own the latest Shield and love the AI upscaling feature for <4K content and Nvidia Geforce Now integration. Unfortunately, I have to reboot the thing at least once every week because it hangs, slows down, or has some other weird issue. It bothers me enough to consider switching to an Apple TV since it seems more stable.

What else does the Apple TV do better than the Shield?

From what I've read the ATV4K matches frame rate better and is a lot easier to do than on the Shield. If you care about that, that is something to consider. I don't own a Shield, so I can't speak to how much easier or better the ATV4K frame rate matching is to the Shield, though.

Also, if you use HomeKit or plan to, the ATV is nice to have because you can pull up your HomeKit cameras on the screen (can also do PIp with the camera while watching a show). I just replaced some of my smart devices with HomeKit compatible ones and I find it useful.

Same experience here, amazing user experience of launching apps and continuing from where we stopped last. Remote is actually over sensitive but better than laggy. Samsung software sucks they just don't care for their mid range tvs

Just swapped out my nvidia shield pro 2019 for this. So far then picture quality looks great for SDR and HDR content. Auto frame matching was the main reason why I got this because Disney+ and Netflix Dolby vision content has stuttering issues on the shield.

There is one big flaw with the ATV that might be an issue and that is the flickering during dark scenes for SDR content. I managed to fix it by setting my HDMI output to RGB high instead of the default YCbCr. Supposedly it is a bug with the frame matching setting when turned on.

Anyway, I'm pretty happy with the ATV and will continue to use it at least until the nvidia shield gets android 12 which would include auto frame matching.

By chance, have you disabled or messed with the touch sensitivity/capability on the remote click wheel? I agree, that part of the remote is very responsive/sensitive. I disabled it completely.

It's good if you live apple but for everyone else a chromcast or firestick would work. Also have to buy an hdmi cable, since it doesn't come with one.

You can adjust the sensitivity within the settings. I turned the touch feature off but it can be adjusted from High, Medium, Low

My Blu-ray player, AV receiver, Nvidia Shield, and TV didn't come with an HDMI cable, either.
