Nice but I would suggest also buying corner guards. The corners look pretty sharp.

With some basic skills and tools, making something like this is actually quite fun. You can use pine for everything except the top (which I would stain).

I've been looking at doing that but the raw materials alone would be over $200. My plan is to purchase two of these, mount one on top of the other with the top one mirroring the bottom, brace and affix the back with studs for strength/support and strap it to the wall for safety. Should be less than $150 all in.

I hear ya...but if you build it yourself you have a quality piece for life instead of a junky fiberboard POS that you'll toss in a few years.
Plus..you can easily refinish it to remove scrapes. Something you can't do with a fake wood piece.
We have some custom built ins around our windows and I totally love them.
