Apple users who don't know how to format the drive so that it'd work for their computer. Then they return it to buy another hdd that is "Official mac compatible" for an extra $200 lol

Grab several, test this thoroughly with CrystalDiskInfo and badblocks, see if these are indeed new. WD is known for being really good about hiding the SMART data in terms of when the drive has defects.

Overall, even for non-critical storage you don't want things to fail! But you may luck out, and these are brand new!

I've bought a few of the 4TB drives! I used them as backup drives connected to a raspberry pi. They have been running nonstop for about 4 months with no issues.
I got them because I'll always have a second copy of the data that's on them so I don't risk anything if one dies.
Also I checked the SMART info for them when I got them and it showed they had only been booted 3 times so I think the drive themselves might be new just with reused shells? But I can't confirm that.

These most likely are all SMR drives. So if you plan to move data around often, expect an early likelyhood of drive failure... These are really meant for long term storage (so less frequent use)

I want to regularly auto backup some of my folders from my Windows PC to two of these drives (for contingency). Anyone knows the best low-cost/free solution to do it?

Honestly, just go the backblaze route. They're cheap and allow you to do the 1,2,3 backup solution route which is pretty iron tight for keeping your data safe and redundant.

AFAIK, backblaze is like $5/month.

Have always looked upon buying refurbished hard drives as akin to buying used underwear.

About the only use scenario I'd endorse would be to get several of them and use for a daily backup rotation.

Bought the 4tb game drive for my PS5. Even if it fails won't be a big loss since cloud saves work. Hopefully any failure happens within first 2 years though.

Yeah, this is basically WD getting rid of the last of a dying breed of drives, even in the brand new category. Prices being slashed on Seagate externals at Costco lately.

Just not much need to store data on spinners like this any longer.
