This is true, and good for prospective buyers to consider the upgrade to ET8. I own both models, and have had zero problems in about 3 years with the RT AX92U.

A wired backhaul was not in the cards in our new house, and we've noticed that the WiFi 6 makes a difference in a 3000sq ft space. We had dead spots, upgraded to the ET8 and no deadspots using just two of the more recent ET8 and the Wifi 6 they afford. Now we use the AX92U as nodes in the mesh.

I can attest to these being fairly easy to set up, and the GUI on the backend is user-friendly enough that I'm able to do some cool things that would otherwise feel beyond my technical comfort zone. Both models were great investments, and it was nice to be able to still use the AX92U in my mesh even after I upgraded to ET8.

Got this a week or so ago, it's worked pretty great with our new gigabit fiber. Our house is about 2500 SQ feet so not too big, but the range is more than we really need - one would probably cover the whole house. Wired backhaul does really help, though apparently there is a way to turn the WiFi 6 into a non-dedicated backhaul so you could theoretically use it wirelessly (can't vouch for how well it'd work). Dong Knows Tech reviewed it really well and he mentions it there if you want to know more: https://dongknows.com/asus-rt-ax92u-review/

I think it's particularly worth it compared to TP Link and other models in a similar price range - ASUS includes their full security and parental control suite with the router, no subscription necessary (unlike TP Link). Seems like a really good mesh for a small to medium house, no complaints so far.

ASUS > TP-Link, generally speaking.

Had an aging ASUS RT-AC68U which worked well for years and was still being updated but in my new townhouse I was getting constant signal drops in the second floor. I spent a few months looking around reading reviews ect and went with 2 of these AX92U and it works great for me, setup was super easy. I was hesitant to spend money on what is mostly wifi 5 router s when 6ghz is around the corner but realized all my devices are wifi 5 and I only have 200mps internet, this gives me full signal on the second floor and full throughput using wireless backhaul. No regrets after using it a few months, no more signal drop outs, no need for reboots, has been super stable.

I don't understand. Are you saying you can only get Wifi6 speeds as purely wired or purely wireless? Your statement initially sounds like Wifi 6 needs to be wired, but then you say it works wireless too.
I think he meant if u want to take advantage of the full speed of wifi6 mesh wired throughout your house without losing the 6ghz dedicated band. If wireless mesh, it will use the 3rd 6ghz band. (i think thats what im getting from this).

are these any better than a couple of ac68u's in mesh mode? i have them at the moment with ethernet backhaul, and they're not good at handoff for apple devices (haven't tried others). i think the signals from the two 68u's overlap too much, which causes devices not to switch from one to the other fast enough.

Works better for me. I actually made that same upgrade. It depends on your individual home though and there is a setting for adjusting when it hands over.

Any thoughts on this versus the Zenwifi XT8 AX 6600? Other than the XT8 having a higher 2.5GB WAN input, versus 1 GB on this unit, I dont see any difference.

Can these be used as WAP only? I already have a dedicated router handling all my wired networking. Trying to move away from Unifi wireless

I do exactly this and it works great.

My config is a handful of posts up.
Great tip TheEdge! I also see a few others posted about the benefits of MoCA.I wish I had heard about this last year. By my estimation, I could have used my Netgear Nighthawk R7000 with two MoCA adapters (cost: $115-$150 depending on which you buy, and another ~$10 for a POE filter [amazon.com]) to produce about the same coverage and speed as a $350 mesh system (maybe even a bit better, as MoCA is more resilient than wireless, so no risk of periodic signal drops). I use the ASUS XT8 mesh system and it's meeting all my needs (great coverage, range, speed) but I am shaking my head a bit! Total cost of MoCA: $125 (adapters+POE) versus $350 for mesh. So I paid about 2.8x as much. EEK!

These MoCA bonded 2.5 kit options (a set of 2 adapters) looked interesting to me, based on an Amazon search for MoCA adapters [amazon.com]. Seems 2.5 version of MoCA (bonded) supports fastest speeds and works the best. POE filter is needed to prevent your network traffic from leaking out of your house.
  • Hitron, $139.99; ScreenBeam, $149.99; Motorola, $137.99 (I think this [amazon.com] is the set you got? Reduced price from $175.99); TRENDnet, $129.99; goCoax, $114.99.
I will keep this in mind for future applications or when assisting family & friends with network configurations. Another useful technology!

Have you (or anyone using MoCA) had any issues with it? Seems that would work more reliably than wireless, based on what I have read.

Much more reliable than wireless. Much higher speeds at distance too.

See posts #18, #19, #50 earlier in this thread. If I'm reading those right, if you use wireless backhaul (for the two to connect to each other), then you can't use WiFi 6 networking as it is used for the backhaul connection.

I have the Asus XT8 (tri-band system) and use wireless backhaul. XT8 has a 2.4ghz radio and two 5ghz radios. Since I'm using wireless backhaul, one 5ghz radio/band is used for backhaul and the other 5ghz band is available for my clients. I have not seen any performance/speed impacts from using wireless backhaul. I am wondering if the same issue noted with the AX92U (when using wireless backhaul) may apply to the XT8? I am not using any WiFi 6 clients with it yet but I read many reviews before purchase, and never saw this concern raised, so I would believe it does not apply to the XT8.

I think otherwise the two units are fairly close. I like the look of the XT8 a bit more (blends in a little better in the living room), but I think both are capable systems and each would be a good choice.

BTW I had tried another dual-band mesh system before this (a dual-band Asus ZenWifi AX Mini [amazon.com]) and wireless backhaul with that didn't work well. Near the router I would get fast speeds, but downstairs near the node I would get about 1/2 speed. So if using wireless backhaul, a tri-band system is needed. A dual-band system can also work well if you used *wired* backhaul. And per the earlier posts in this thread, I think a dual-band system with wired backhaul using MoCA could work very well!

Deal is dead at Newegg, but available for only ~$20 more ($249.99) from Amazon [amazon.com] and ASUS [asus.com]. Also on Newegg I see pricing as low as $238.99 but they are 3rd party sellers.
