Interesting. I've been to Belize for a short stay at mainland, then the majority of the trip at San Pendro and a day trip to Caye Caulker. It was awesome and even our 3 year old was with us. This was around 2015 and it seemed really safe.

How does this area compare to San Pedro from a safety standpoint?

Additional hotel-specific charges: A 9% tax and 15% resort fee per night is not included and will be paid directly to the hotel. The resort fee covers complimentary use of kayaks, pool, beach toys, and bikes.

So, if you go the $255 route, they add the resort fee which brings it up to $293.25, then they tax it so you will pay $319.64.

We've been to the placencia peninsula twice and have stayed in Airbnb in Maya Beach as well as closer to the village at Chabil Mar. I felt very safe both times as did my wife and 4 kids. Use common sense like you would anywhere. My biggest concern to my safety was am I going to get bit by a stray dog while running long distances? We have an Airbnb reserved to go back this October but airfare is $1200pp to BZE and then flying to placencia or adding a rental car adds even more so we likely to cancel the Airbnb and go to Ireland (found crazy deal). If my memory serves me this resort is at north end of the peninsula and is a 20 minute shuttle ride to the village at the south end. Personally I'd want to be within walking distance to the village, that was awesome.

My brother was visiting town when a "spothead" (local name for a crackhead as he was later explained by police) approached him and his wife and said, "Give me a dollar or I'll kill you."

My brother just backed away as the man walked in circles around cars and was telling the crackhead to leave them alone. A police officer came over and got the crackhead.

Take that how you may. Yes, a crackhead threatened to murder them for a dollar and chased them, but also the crackhead was rapidly apprehended.

I'd still feel safer in Belize than many neighborhoods in Washington DC, but don't fool yourself that Belize is a very safe country. It is not. Belize had the 7th highest murder rate in the world. One should keep their wits about them. Like most dangerous countries, you'll probably be fine in any resort as they are guarded and pay off the police for protection.

No food is included. $75 per person per day for three basic meals (not all inclusive) with coffee or tea & no alcoholic beverages included. The food deal sucks. If you have a rental car you'll be fine because you can drive 15 minutes for much lower priced $ better quality food.

$1500pp for a week - airfare is the more challenging but $800rt cheaper than than the $1200rt to BZE. We are saving maybe $1200 off the price this summer for all four of us to go. The older kids are in college or have a real job so they miss out lol

Spot on with crime and Belize City. Belize City has most of the crime and no one that visits Belize spends much time there besides hopping on the ferry or picking up a rental car. Also be aware that rental cars there are not the one or two year models you get in the states or Europe. It's going to be 5 or 6 years old with a lot of hard miles on it. We went with our 3 year old son and loved every minute. We didn't make it to Plancencia, but it will be part of our next trip. We went to San Pedro and had some great Italian food there. Caye Caulker is great for more a laid back vibe. Not as noisy with golf carts and minivans all over like San Pedro. San Ignacio is a really cool town with an awesome farmers market. Monkey Bay in Belmopan is nice if you want to get adventurous and more wildlife.

Been to this city before, but different resort. Don't expect to see wide clean and beatiful beaches. But just enough semi-clean beach area to enjoy yourself.

TIP: Try to put some time aside and walk the half circle beach and walk back through the inner part of the city. It is a nice walk and good scenery.

Love Placencia - perfectly safe. This is oceanside (vs lagoon side) so better breeze and less mosquitos. 15min blue bus ride will get you into town for $2. Haven't been there in a while but Mango's use to have a coconut crusted lionfish that's superb.

Walter White : Hank knows. That's not nothing.
Saul Goodman : Have you given any thought to sending him out on a trip to Belize?
Walter White : Belize?
Saul Goodman : Yeah, Belize, you know where Mike went to.
Walter White : Saul, you'd better not be saying what I think you're saying. Hank is family!
Saul Goodman : I'm just throwing thoughts out there, this is a safe room.
Walter White : Jesus, send him to Belize. I'll send you to Belize.
