    Depends on the age group. Lord of the Rings is a bit more advanced, like age 12+ These are really age 7 or 8+. Fantastic book for kids maybe 3rd or 4th grade and older. They really are good books for any age, honestly, but Lord of the Rings is a more challenging read for elementary age kids.

    Actually, these books are adult oriented children's books. Read Prince Caspian where God is described in an amazing way in such a way that only mature adult can appreciate.

    I love both but if I had to choose I'd say LOTR, J.R.R Tolkien is essentially the father of fantasy world building down to creating languages for his epic. But….both series are amazing and have been loved for decades so it's not really an either or, read both. If deciding between the two as a gift it depends on the reader: reading level/ability, interest.
    Fun fact: CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien were close friends for a couple decades.
