iPhone 7/7plus will NOT get iOS 16 along with iPhone 6s.

Point is to assume every iphone will get long support is not correct.
Agreed, but with a caveat.

Not sure what "long" means to you but by my definition (others too), anything >3 years is long time to keep a phone. Apple's data suggests the average length of ownership for ALL their devices is a bit more than 4 years. That will vary by device type and the data seems to suggest for iPhones is just under 3 years.

While I agree we can't make assumptions about how long Apple will support their iPhones, I think it's reasonable to assume 5 years given Apple's history of support and for me, that's a long time...at least 25% longer than what Samsung is officially stating for their Galaxy devices (4 years).

Agreed.

The expected supported lifetime of an iPhone is 5 years. The iPhone 13 currently retails at 799 with 128gb of memory. Not considering trade-in values, that works to $13.31/month of ownership.

The expected life for this phone is another 36 months. 36 months multiplied by $13.31 is $479.40. Add in AppleCare for $150 for a total of $629.40.

If this is the phone you want, the insurance you want, the memory you want and knowing in approximately 36mos you'll lose support from Apple then the $30 savings might be worth it for you.
Apple supports devices for 5 years after they stop distributing it. So, support is longer than 3 more years, probably closer to 5.

Agreed.

My point was when I calculate what the denominator of $/year cost of a phone is, I would use 6 years instead of 7.

Now, since iPhone 12 is already out for 2 years, the denominator will be reduced by 2 years and hence will be 6-2=4 years. Hence I will use $/4 to calculate iPhone12 cost per year.

As per my calculations, we only come ahead only IF we get the AppleCare+ back, that too not by much.

So, if cash is not tight on my end OR I don't need a phone immediately, I can wait(financial calculation).

Wasn't the iPhone 12 release just under 2 years ago? With my assumption of 5 years the would mean Apple can be expected to support the iPhone for another 3 years ( 36mos).

If Apple is expected to support the iPhone for 5 years beyond the last distribution date, then my assumption would increase by a year for a total of 6 years of support, yes?
