Why does a single 20 oz coke cost more than a 2 liter
I'm also a big fan of having two tanks. But why not just get two 20-lb tanks? The 5-lb tanks don't last very long.
Why does this cost more than a 20lb for Costco

Yep, I agree, unless your old and weak to lift them.

Did you know the ones you get at Walmart and Lowes only have 15 lbs in them? If you get them refilled, they will put the full 20 lbs in. Something about shipping requirements.

This - plus if you live near an Indian reservation you can refill them pretty cheap (
$12 in my case)

For home use I have two, 20lb tanks that are refilled (@ ~$20 in SE PA). For tailgating, camping, etc I was leaning towards picking up a 5lb tank, but ran into the supply shortages that the OP mentioned. Ultimately I decided on buying two, 1lb tanks and a refill adapter, and I'm a very happy camper (pun intended). The two 1lb tanks are ultra portable and have lasted me on a camping trip with over a week's worth of breakfasts and dinners. For what it's worth, the 5lb tank should last longer and the 1lb tanks are not meant to be refilled, so YMMV...

I've always wondered this also. I thought it's because of how many are produced compared to the 20+lbs tanks. But I see a lot of hikers have them, and the tailgaters at Arrowhead like to use them. Usually the people not driving a pickup truck.

You are paying for the form factor. Having a 5lb is very handy for weekend trips or tailgating for football season. Its also easier to carry 1 5lb vs several 1 lb green cannisters. It will save you money in the long run. The 1 lbs are not supposed to be refillable but ppl do it anyways. I got mine from Costco.com last time and I'd do it again if I didn't have one already.

Supply and demand. If people will buy optimal quantities at optimal price, then it gets priced accordingly.

pretty good deal.
I got the 5 Lbs. Steel Propane Cylinder with OPD Valve & Built-in Gauge from Costco a month ago for $49.99. If you don't need the gauge, this totally works.
