The second thing you said is what works.

So a person who has NO subscription at all, who wants to use one of these cards to jump into the Extra (2nd) tier, should
1) subscribe MONTH TO MONTH (don't pay for a whole year, just sign up to be billed monthly) at the Extra tier.
2) once you are billed for 1 month of Extra, you should then be able to redeem the card from OP for the equivalent months of Extra that cost the same as 1 year of Essentials by putting in the code. So Essentials costs $60/yr, so that is the value of the card. Extra costs $100/yr. So you should get 6/10 of a year from this card for Extra approx.
3) You can then safely cancel your month to month plan if you want to as well, if you don't want it to auto-renew at the end.

A person who is currently an Essentials member already will have to:
1) upgrade their account to Extra. You do this by paying the prorated amount to turn your remaining months of Essentials into Extra, whatever that amount is
2) once that payment goes through and you now have an Extra account, you should then be able to redeem the card from OP for the equivalent months of Extra that cost the same as 1 year of Essentials by putting in the code. these new months will "tack on" at the end of whatever remaining months you just paid to upgrade.

Note for the 2nd one, people are often instead doing the other standard trick of buying years and years and years of Essential before upgrading to Extra, as there is a max charge PS will charge you to upgrade no matter how many years you have stacked. I don't like that "trick" as much because I'm not sure I want to be locked into a PS+ account, or a PS+ Extra account, for 5+ years of my life. Maybe I'll have an XBOX or some kind of Monster Nintendo in 4 years, who the F knows?
Ordered one from them recently and it was an invalid key.

Currently fighting Sony and Cdkeys to either get it added, replaced or refunded. Trying to avoid a chargeback at this time because I don't want to be banned from buying from them in the future.

Frustrating though and wasn't worth the cost savings.
FYI: You CAN stack this for at least 15 years.

So after redeeming is the only way to upgrade to ps extra is to pay Sony $40 directly? Is there any way to convert the 1 year of essentials to half year of extra? Tia

I redeemed the code through the PS app on my phone and it worked. So if anyone has an error, try that instead.

I thought the max was 3 years? Guess this recently changed?

I had this problem last time. Took awhile for CDKeys to investigate it and once they seen I hadn't used the code, I received a refund. Just have patience with them. They should make it right.

Xbox Live Gold is 3 years max. PS Plus isn't actually 15 years, it just doesn't let you add years past 2036.
