Answer this question
A: No it can't. DS220J memory is fixed at 512 MB. Current software upgrade requires a minimum of 1 GB according to Synology's own notes. Avoid this model/brand.

I purchased a DS120j which has inferior specs to this and it runs the latest software (7.2) just fine, I'm sure this will work without any issues. It's not meant to be some power house but for a entry unit into NAS it is pretty well regarded.

I am returning the DS120j to get this because $50 more for USB3.0, an extra bay, and better hardware is a no brainer but it worked great for me.

If I get crazy into NAS and my needs go up, this can be the perfect offsite NAS

For all those wondering, this is mainly for data backup not media streaming, but it works great for the price and basic data storage

I have a DS212J that is still working but running out of space. I am planning to add bigger hard drives. Maybe this is a good time to upgrade to 220J. Then I see the DS720+ on sale too for $320. Debating if I should get that instead. Decisions, decisions
