You must be joking. The Nvidia Shield runs rings around the crappy Roku. And Roku is about to lose a lot of apps because of their greedy "all money must go through us policy"

Firesticks and Rokus are garbage, and even the Fire Cube (yes, I have them all) can't compare to the shield. I even hacked mine so that I can press the nextflix button a short press and open plex. Long press, open netflix and double click it, and it opens hulu.

I've owned every version of Firesticks /Fire TVs except the cubes. I also own an Apple TV 4k (2017). My Shield is the 2017 version. My breakdown below:

Firestick 4k Max: Best bang for your buck streamer. Can be found on sale for around $35.

Pros:

Affordable
Supports every iteration of HDR (Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG)
AV1 support
Can play Youtube HDR
Can sideload apps (Kodi, etc.)
Wifi 6

Cons:

UI is ad-supported
Needs additional hardware to run ethernet and increase storage
No bitstreaming of HD audio
Occasionally needs to be rebooted

Apple TV 4K: Best pure streamer. 2021 model can be found on sale for $120-$130

Pros:

Very fluid UI. Fastest, smoothest navigation
No ads (mostly) There is autoplay enabled to some of their music video selection
Airplay 2. If you have Airplay 2 devices this makes multi room audio incredibly easy
Gigabit Ethernet

Cons:

Locked down to apple's ecosystem (No Kodi, etc.)
No usb ports for storage or game controllers
No HDR10+
No AV1 support
No Youtube HDR

Nvidia Shield: Swiss-army knife of streamers. Can be found on sale for $170

Pros:

Great for game emulators
64 bit Android (can run Dolphin emulator, Kodi 64 bit, etc)
Has usb ports for storage, game controllers, webcams, etc
Can sideload apps (Kodi, etc)
Can use Google Duo with supported webcam
Can run Plex server
Can run Channels DVR server
Bitstreams HD audio
AI upscaling (I do not have this version)
Gigabit ethernet

Cons:

Ad-supported
Last update introduced many issues (I did not update)
No HDR10+
No Youtube HDR
Occasionally needs to be rebooted

I'm sure I missed a few things but this is a general idea. I have a use case for all three streamers so I have them all connected to my main display. It really comes down to personal use case. I'm personally hoping NVidia upgrades the Shield to support AV1, HDR10+ and Youtube HDR. That would eliminate my need for the Firestick 4K Max. Being able to have the game on and airplay to other rooms makes the Apple TV 4K a keeper to me.

Hope this helps

Can someone answer a couple of questions for me? I have an "Android" TV os and honestly can't stand the interface... so much so that I had to get a Fire cube. Now to be fair, I'm an old head so... I like my stuff simple but...

Is this different in any way? Meaning, would this OS be different from the android OS that was built into my set?

I'm also looking to play Steam games... could this work?

Thanks a bunch!`

Shield does run Android TV , but its a more beefier version of it . (hardware wise when compared to your Android tv device)
Yes ! this does play steam games - you do need a PC to run the game and the Shield can mirror it on TV . You can pair a controller to it as well . In addition it has Geforce NOW compatibility - you can play free games (there's a wait time though ) or if you have a membership, no wait time.

One of the best Android Streaming Media players on the market!! I love mine, had it for 2yrs now. Tried many Fire sticks, Roku's and both are an inferior product to this Nvidia Shield. This machine gives more storage which is a huge issue on Firesticks, the infamous insufficient storage message.
Now all I'm waiting for is Nvidia to give us an updated Shield sometime soon. I recommend this product as the best Android Streaming device. You get what you pay for. I want quality over cheaper inferior options.

For Android I go: Nvidia Shield >> Chromecast with Google TV >> everything else.

For years I've been using both Shield TV Pro and Shield TV in my home with external HDs with content. It takes a little bit or work managing a library on an external HD. Agree with others that it's overkill for a streaming device and my basic (not pro) Shield remote sucks. I love my pro version. I like the performance I get on Kodi, general snappiness of the interface and apps, and the fact that Amazon or someone else can't take away what I want to do with my device in the future. We have enjoyed consuming content in remote places like camping. Haven't used it recently but I was using local gamestream in my home as I have a PC with an RTX 3080. At the time I used it, it worked well in some games. Graphics were great but controls were a bit off sometimes and it depended on the particular game. I stopped using gamestream because it wasn't necessary and also I didn't wire ethernet and was instead using WiFi only. If something happened to one of my Shield devices, I wouldn't think twice about buying again.

Not a good product. I would stumble upon bugs here and there plus the remote was too flimsy. I ended up getting a Roku since I only got the Shield back when you could not get HBO Max on Roku. In the end, it did not deliver the premium experience that I expected for the price.
Seriously? Roku and Fire TV are not only the worst of all choices for a good Smart TV experience, they're by FAR the worst at data collection and privacy.

Since nobody has really answered the "why this over that" question: One good reason is streaming services and their restrictions on content.

Netflix, for instance, requires a certified HDCP compliant device to steam 1080P or 4K.

Use a noncompliant device and it will only serve up 720P.
Most streaming devices for smart TVs are Netflix compliant

I used to be a huge fan of the Nvidia Shield TV, until the fan started dying on mine and it now overheats constantly. Looking at the way it's setup, I think that fan was always running and this outcome is inevitable. I cleaned it out but I guess it was too late, because it's still so unstable is not usable.

I think the device may be doomed to a 4 - 6 year lifespan, unless you plan to do annual disassembly and cleaning. But... I still think Shield TV is the best streamer out there.

You need to experience the new Google TV skin that most almost every Android TV device is adopting. Apple TV and Google TV are by far the best and only good options.

It's not doomed to that but sounds like you got unlucky.

Many people are still using the first gen from 2016!

I still use the 2015 version as my primary streaming device, but I am tempted to upgrade to this one.

Best/Only AI Upscaler to 4K on a streaming device
High compatibility with USB & Bluetooth controllers and Arcade sticks for those with a google play store library.
I don't have one but would want one one for a garage/outdoor deck tv.
For folks without a gaming console this is a great option and gift.
