I mean why this over a Google TV and. Steam Deck and PC? I remember you could do some hacky shit with it but I don't remember what it is and that was the only thing that ever made me think it was worth the money. It wasn't just 4K streaming, there were some other cool things that you could do with it, but I would appreciate anybody chiming in with the refresher.
Main advantage of this is the audio support (especially if you use a Plex Server or play movies from a local hard drive). This was the only model available that was capable of playing DTS or lossless audio from my digital BluRay collection. It also seems to have the best integration with mainstream apps for Dolby atmos (Netflix, Disney, HBO Max). So for me, the differentiator was the audio quality paired with my home theater setup and receiver.

I used to be a huge fan of the Nvidia Shield TV, until the fan started dying on mine and it now overheats constantly. Looking at the way it's setup, I think that fan was always running and this outcome is inevitable. I cleaned it out but I guess it was too late, because it's still so unstable is not usable.

I think the device may be doomed to a 4 - 6 year lifespan, unless you plan to do annual disassembly and cleaning. But... I still think Shield TV is the best streamer out there.
It doesn't even need the fan unless gaming

Not a good product. I would stumble upon bugs here and there plus the remote was too flimsy. I ended up getting a Roku since I only got the Shield back when you could not get HBO Max on Roku. In the end, it did not deliver the premium experience that I expected for the price.
Agree. I got audio skip in plex, laggy , bugs bugs bugs. I sold mine from last Amazon deal. Went back to Apple TV

Will the Shield run as a server allow me to set recordings of live tv through Plex using my HDHomerun networked tuners? I run a PC 24/7 as my Plex server now and am considering moving the duty to the Shield..
Sure does.

I never gamed on mine and it was in a fan ventilated cabinet with a lot of other hardware that's fine: Onkyo receiver, Xbox, switch, wii u at one point, multiple Xboxes over the years and nothing has failed except for a network switch and my Shield TV (2017).

I don't dislike the Shield TV but I kind of want to raise awareness about checking your fan and cleaning it. Every time I looked at mine, the fan was at least running on low. As long as it was plugged in I think the fan was running

Hmm 15% off on a 3 year old model with hardware that is 5-7 years old?!

The FireTV Cube goes on sale for $60 with equal CPU performance. Sure it can't play TrueHD and DTS-MA if you are still buying Blu-rays, but it can play HDR YouTube content which the Shield can't.

Amazon will be releasing the 3rd gen Cube in October. It's a safe bet that it will be a lot cheaper than $170. And considering it's the next generation of the current Cube, it's also a safe bet that it will be faster than the Shield.

Shield used to be the only streamer that didn't have annoying ads. Then Google forced the issue and ads got added to the home screen. Nvidia posted in the forums that they were collecting "feedback". Did they ever do anything meaningful? $170 is a lot for a device with ads. I ended up installing a custom launcher, which was not the easiest because Google also tries to restrict that. Like others, I got the Shield Pro for DTS-HD support, but was really disappointed when Nvidia didn't go to bat for customers against the ads.

I'd agree. 2019 tech sound over the hill. However, what could they 'upgrade' it? Aside from bigger capacity?

I've noticed some lagging and stuttering when watching Hulu and sometimes YouTube on my Shield Tube. The tube is connected via Ethernet. I disconnected it and tried Wifi and had the same issues. Thinking of replacing it with this model. Anyone else had similar issues?
