Firesticks and Rokus are garbage, and even the Fire Cube (yes, I have them all) can't compare to the shield. I even hacked mine so that I can press the nextflix button a short press and open plex. Long press, open netflix and double click it, and it opens hulu.
Firestick 4k Max: Best bang for your buck streamer. Can be found on sale for around $35.

I'm sure I missed a few things but this is a general idea. I have a use case for all three streamers so I have them all connected to my main display. It really comes down to personal use case. I'm personally hoping NVidia upgrades the Shield to support AV1, HDR10+ and Youtube HDR. That would eliminate my need for the Firestick 4K Max. Being able to have the game on and airplay to other rooms makes the Apple TV 4K a keeper to me.

The Shield UI before and after recent launcher changes is also less user friendly for my family members, though I could fix that by replacing the launcher. I did buy ButtonMapper to remap the Netflix button, and that was nice (the Netflix button is much easier to accidentally press than the channel buttons on Roku remotes), but it stopped working at some point and I haven't had a chance to troubleshoot.
I love the headphone jack in the Roku remote -- works much better than Bluetooth on the Shield which is unreliable. Though granted I could probably connect a USB device to the Shield to work around that (e.g. headphones that have their own transmitter or a better Bluetooth transmitter).
The only things I occasionally use the Shield for is game streaming from my PC which works ok, and I occasionally use Kodi. I connected 2TB drive, the issue is when I try to transfer a big batch of files over the network, the Roku disconnects. For those use cases, I'd be much better served with cheap mini PC. I just got a Steam Deck, and planning to give it a try for those use cases (while docked).
I want to like the Shield TV Pro, and there are some things are quite nice with it and its very versatile. I could probably get more out of it if I spend more time hacking it and troubleshooting the issues, and I'm a technical user who could do such things, but I just haven't spent the time to do it, and even if I did I'm not sure I'd trust it to keep working so I wouldn't switch my family members to it. Meanwhile, our Roku Ultras just work and we can watch content without issue. If I had to try another TV product line with the intention of getting something my whole family could use, it would be Apple TV (which does do auto refresh rate switching and apps available are decent enough).
BTW I believe Amazon Fire TV devices do auto refresh rate switching. I've never used one.

If you experience any problems with a Shield, a factory reset and set up from scratch usually fixes it.

Google nerfed the crap out of it with their slow UI in recent android versions. Have to install and configure your own launcher to get it fast and snappy again like when first purchased years ago. For this price why doesn't Nvidia solve the UI issues? Normal users aren't going to install custom launchers and shouldn't have to. Just get a Tivo stream or equivalent for $30 or less, Nvidia fell asleep at the wheel with the shield.

I'm in sort of a transition phase at home, no HTPC at the moment, which I normally do have one. It does all the streaming services smooth as glass and has a nice outside the app "suggested shizzle" screen.
Since I don't have an HTPC going at the moment, we're running a bit thin on video games on the TV. My kids have been using Google Stadia on this and don't seem to mind the lack of the normal HTPC. On top of that there's some native Android games on there that work great.
Even though I don't have the HTPC, I still have my Linux machine in another room with my Kodi library on SMB and NFS - I connect right up to it and Kodi works just as well as it did on my HTPC (which I was using a big HDD on synced to my Linux machine with SyncThing).
The remote is intuitive and just works great. I rarely use the voice search option - that's just me, but when I have used it worked fine.
I wish you could buy non-smart TV's these days, because I don't care what kind of TV I get, I'm not going to use the smart functions, I'm just going to plug my Shield TV into it.

Why in the world anyone would down-vote this is beyond me.. People shit on phones all day long if they are a last gen specs (even though they are capable).
It makes no sense to pay this type of money for such old hardware. Yes it works now, but that's no guarantee that it'll be quick/capable in the near future.
This is a fine product for basic streaming, Plex server usage, and game streaming. For these things it still works perfectly fine. The interface has gotten crappier as time has gone on, and apps are sometimes quirky on my unit while I have no issues with the same apps on Roku or Apple TV. Choice is good, and consumers should be aware of their options and if the SD users can pass along their experiences citing pros and cons, that should be celebrated, not downvoted into obscurity.
This hardware is old af. As much as I loathe Apple, the Apple TV is the best streamer right now. If you're okay being locked down into their ecosystem (same with Roku and FireTV) you're better off getting it.
That's not necessarily to shit on this product, just that I agree that it's way overpriced for how dated the hardware is at this time.
