Is there a new model coming out any time soon? If so I will just wait to get that. I think I have the 2017 Shield and it still works great, but it doesn't have Atmos support. When I choose Atmos sources on Kodi the screen is purple or green for some reason. I will hold out for a bit longer if a new model is coming.
Both my old and new (2016 and 2019?) models handle atmos through Kodi fine, that's one of the reasons I got the shields. I have tried pretty much every other streaming box and the shield was the one that did everything so well I could finally get away from having a pc connected to my tv. They are the only device that plays every format of audio and video I have. Plus I love having a nice clean front end, the new amazon devices especially are so busy I can't stand using them. My original one has been running 24/7 since 2016 without any issues, same for my new one since 2019.

There is gonna be a new model this year for sure. It's been 3 years and we are now starting to see discounts. I bet a new one is announced by November.
I hope you're right!! What's your prediction on price?

Bought this about a year ago - like people are saying, the AI upscaling is pretty great and the speed of the device is top notch. I've definitely had some issues with it (sometimes random crashes / lag / etc.) but those are few and far between. Not sure how it compares to the lower end model but I am not mad about my purchase.

I'm used to building an HTPC to go side by side w/ my TV, until I found this. This has been working out great, and it decodes Dolby Atmos well. Much easier to manage this little package compared to having another PC. And Plex is a breeze, once you have it configured.
This is exactly why i've been eyeing a shield pro. Actually i'm waiting for the new one coz i hope one's in the works.

Would you mind elaborating more on the htpc vs shield pro experience please, because i'm still in the "htpc next to it" camp. Thanks!

I've never seen so many people mad at a piece of hardware. This thing is amazing and I'm never using another streaming device. I bought it initially got full sound quality, atmos etc. but even then, the UI is so simple, super fast. I'm not going back to some dad firestick lol.

As someone who's been in the Firestick environment, what's apps can't this do?

I'm really looking for a change, and I'm praying this can use Kodi. Also, any comment on how this deals with extra remotes? Repp for help!!

Love the shield except for no auto frame matching. And the manual method still seems to not be good enough when playing Dolby vision content on Disney+ or Netflix. Hopefully when it receives android 12 with auto frame matching it will be fixed.

Hopefully this doesn't ship with the latest Android if you want to use it as a Plex server. That seriously goobered up PMS and I'm not sure Plex and Nvidia have sorted it out yet.

I had the good sense to not install the latest Android right away, and just wait and see. I'll probably never install it as it broke too many things while not adding any features I'm interested in.

There is a method to downgrade the Android version, but it's pretty involved.

Combining this with the 20% off at Best Buy for Chase card offers would drop it to $150 (it's 20% off but with $20 max credit). Not bad but still too expensive for what it is. The only reason I'd be looking to get one of this is for the fact that it can support DTS passthrough for Kodi unlike FireTV Sticks which used to allow it but then Amazon made a douchebag move to prevent it.

Unlesss you stream game get it! Simple set up and fast wifi

If just watch content and stuff expect somewhat laggy UI like fire stick
Even the older non-4k version of the Shield gives the Fire Stick a cleavland steamer.

I've been holding off on buying one of these for a long time because I didn't want a passthrough device just to be able to watch 4K Plex content on my TCL TV. However, seeing the praise it's getting, I'll be keeping an eye out for a new version to release hopefully this year. As it stands now, my TV can't stream the content fast enough to do true 4K (~75MB/s required, and the TV sits less than a foot above my gigabit router. TCL sucks for this one shortcoming in particular.)
