How well does this work as a Plex Server if I want to connect an external drive with large media files? My old QNAP NAS just chugs, but have heard mixed things about the Shield as a Plex Media Server.
Hope they're not in ISO formats as the Plex server doesn't support them. Even my WDTV plays ISOs perfectly.

REPOST. Don't need two deal threads.

It's only suitable as a server for small libraries with optional features like thumbnailing turned off. The real problem is the 16GB which gets eaten up by metadata and fanart fast. You can add usb storage (sata or nvme, thumb drives are not recommended) but that's an additional cost.

For plex playback it's a champ.
For context I have 638 movies and 50 TV shows and I love it as a server. We get 2 streams cleanly (haven't tried 3). I've seen a lot of complaints but I haven't run into them yet.

Own one, big fan, but... If you aren't planning to do some semi-esoteric things/running a server/emulation/grey-market .apks, and just want a powerful streamer that your spouse/kids/grandma can use, I think the average person is better off with an ATV-4K, if not a Fire TV Stick 4k Max.

Not an Apple fanboy - I own all of the above and I'm a fan of each for different reasons. ATV is in the living room on a 77" OLED for family use. Shield drives the dedicated home theater (but also have an ATV 4k in there for doing Apple Music/Atmospheric). Fire sticks on all the other TVs.

I would wait for an update. This hardware is from 2015 and is showing its age.

Mine freezes like it works bur everytime it turns on my remote won't work on it for 1 minute even tho stuff is moving in the shield
Same. I use Emby on my 2017 Shield Pro and it plays everything I can throw at it, but every so often, the remote ia just non responsive.

Can anyone recommend a budget replacement remote besides the 2019 remote?

I use it for all my apps. I also record OTA with it. Channels DVR that records on my External SD card. Never fails. Much better than using a computer

Price is same, but this is Amazon listed not Best Buy. So it's not a repost.

It works ok, but Plex is temperamental for external storage on this in my experience. I ended up switching to Jellyfin server on Raspberry Pi instead, which has proved more reliable (and free!)

Eh, the hardware was updated a little in 2017 and quite a bit more in 2019. The difference between streaming 1080p on this 2019 version to a 4k TV using the new AI‐upscaling is night and day compared to my old 2015 Shield Pro, or any other device.

You can easily toggle the AI-upscaling on or off on the remote and even demo it with a click to see the improvements it makes. Everyone in the family noticed the dramatic improvement, except for my half-blind spouse who wasn't wearing glasses. 🙄

This has ended up being my most loved gadget. The upscaling really works, and use it for Kodi/Jellyfin/local game streaming. It can be finicky, with some Bluetooth issues and audio bugs, but it is such an insanely capable device that it's worth it

Let me be the first to say, I'll wait for the new release that must be coming soon.
I halfway agree but it could be another year or three before we see that.

I bought this in 2019 and it's seen multiple thousands of hours of use by family members. Every other streamer box and TV interface is terrible in comparison, although the ATV 4k should be compared if you're all in on Apple.

The AI upscaling feature (1080p->4k) has to be seen to be believed. On the MEDIUM setting, 1080p looks almost as good as 4k (maybe like "2.5k to 3k" to give you an idea). It works far better than any TVs consumers generally own that I know about, is snappy, gets major and minor updates for security and new features for YEARS instead of being orphaned like built-in Smart TV OS's, and has the best security as you van disable all snooping and ad features EXCEPT the new top banner. Still, it doesn't listen in on you or what you're watching to send to advertisers like many devices and Smart TVs do *EVEN IF* you think you've disabled all of that.
