Great product. I use mine almost every day for streaming, Steam streaming and Kodi. Much better for kodi than firetv if you have a large library.

Its interesting to see most positive comments are from people who own this and use it daily. The nay sayers look at the spec on paper and call it crap or they dont have a use case for such a powerful player.

Used ones are still running 150+ on ebay. So I don't see the scoffing at the price. Might be a new model on the horizon but who knows. If you need one (apk sideloading, have a bunch of bluray remux, running a plex server, etc) this is pretty much as low as it gets

Hope they're not in ISO formats as the Plex server doesn't support them. Even my WDTV plays ISOs perfectly.

REPOST. Don't need two deal threads.

Yeah, that's my biggest issue with Plex and why I only use it for DVR of OTA. We still use Kodi as I'm not converting 2000+ .iso files.

It's only suitable as a server for small libraries with optional features like thumbnailing turned off. The real problem is the 16GB which gets eaten up by metadata and fanart fast. You can add usb storage (sata or nvme, thumb drives are not recommended) but that's an additional cost.

For plex playback it's a champ.
You can move the Plex metadata library to external storage, but even then the 16GB is not a lot. I constantly have to deal with "Your Shield is low on storage" warnings, despite having few apps installed. Otherwise I love my Shield.

At this price point, why not get an Xbox One X?
Because this is one of the few streaming boxes that can basically do any audio/video format. It supports Dolby Vision, both the streaming and disk types (Can stream full 4k uhds from plex), dolby atmos with TrueHD, DTS Master, etc.

This is like 4 years old and charging $170 is criminal.
Yeah, every thread with an Apple TV 4K has droves of comments lamenting the price (even when it was $120) and comparing it to their $25 Fire Stick, but zero mention of the price on the Shield TV Pro. I guess it's okay when it's not Apple asking too much for their product.

I use this as the media player in my home theater for streaming 4k content from my Plex media server. I compared this the Roku Ultra and the Apple TV 4k and hands down this has the best features and was exactly what I was looking for. 4k, supports Dolby atmos, Ethernet cable. streaming sticks are not even in the same class as these. I do own several sticks but they do not support Dolby atmos and can not handle uncompressed streams of 4k from my plex.

Why not just use one of the USB ports for an external solid state drive, as adoptive memory not external, and move the library there?

I halfway agree but it could be another year or three before we see that.

I bought this in 2019 and it's seen multiple thousands of hours of use by family members. Every other streamer box and TV interface is terrible in comparison, although the ATV 4k should be compared if you're all in on Apple.

The AI upscaling feature (1080p->4k) has to be seen to be believed. On the MEDIUM setting, 1080p looks almost as good as 4k (maybe like "2.5k to 3k" to give you an idea). It works far better than any TVs consumers generally own that I know about, is snappy, gets major and minor updates for security and new features for YEARS instead of being orphaned like built-in Smart TV OS's, and has the best security as you van disable all snooping and ad features EXCEPT the new top banner. Still, it doesn't listen in on you or what you're watching to send to advertisers like many devices and Smart TVs do *EVEN IF* you think you've disabled all of that.
I'll chime in, I don't think the AI upscaling was that great. I tried out the Shield TV Pro a couple of years back, and all it did was sharpen up outlines of still/slow-moving objects. Textures were still muddy and blurry if the camera was moving and it was extremely distracting to see in motion.

There's always a new, faster, better product around the corner and it usually comes with a higher sticker price.

I have one of these and I love it. We have been heavy users of the 2015 shield TV Pro for many years. (Which I think is pretty much the same as this model.)

My only issue lately is that it seems like I can't get OEM replacement controllers for any reasonable price?

I searched extensively the other day and couldn't find any.

Does anyone know why they are so hard to find and so expensive?

I think there were some available from a third party Amazon seller for like $90.00 or something crazy like that.

I love mine but it often won't work with Hulu. Amazing for Plex. Attached a 1TB usb ssd for the blurays.
