It used to be a somewhat bad value proposition but with the new M chips it's good. Performance per watt, fanless,, optimization is relatively unmatched in windows machines - even after 2 years and likely longer. Not to mention resale value. When the m1 air was down to $750 it was a great buy.

Is it worth getting an MBA over the 14" MBP strictly for the battery life? I probably don't need the power the MBP provides, but I do need 16GB/512SSD so the MBA would be around $1500, which seems like a ripoff relative to the 14" MBP for only $250 more.

I guess my question is - is the 14" MBP battery "good enough"?

Yes, but only if weight and portability matter to you. I have a 14" for 'work' but still bought the M2 Air 16gb/512gb for casual use.

While the 14" battery life is 'good enough' for most people, the M2 Air can last way longer in 'low-power' mode (under the Battery settings) without losing much performance. Check out this video - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=o5BT14rNgo8

I never understood either until recently trying to buy a decent laptop for a college freshman.

It was exhausting to find nice specs (including 12th gen processor) for good value without seeing complaints about build quality (like broken hinges), screen quality (including not bright enough), keyboard and trackpad feel, battery life, audio quality, etc.

The few acceptable models I narrowed down to weren't actually much different in price.
And once I factored in not having to deal with bloatware plus the resale value, buying a MacBook became an easy decision.

Is it worth it? Depends on what you value.

The screen alone is worth it in the 14" and the battery life is fantastic (to me) but the air will have better battery performance as it'll throttle the processor based on thermals whereas the 14" has a fan that can keep it cool (if needed) in order to keep the processor at max capacity.

I have a 16" M1Pro for work and a 14" M1Pro personally and my wife has an Air so I have plenty of experience in all of them. I've never heard the fans in either M1Pro and I use them for more than just browsing.

Can you point me to a laptop that's not a MacBook and is less than $100k that has native FaceTime and iMessage support?

Oh wait. You can't.

The sweet spot for this model seems to be at least 16GB of ram and at least a 512gb SSD. Benchmarks show that an order M1 Air was comparable to the M2 with only 8GB, but with the 16Gb, the M2 really made a difference. Also the 512GB ssd has an extra channel and is faster than the smaller ssd's. The best bang for your buck is a M2 Air with 16gb of ram and at least a 512gb ssd.
Been reading the same thing. Wont touch one until a deal for the 16/512gb M2 comes out.

Because not everyone is just like you or has the same wants/needs. For some users the increased performance of Apple silicon while consuming less power is worth it. For some it's the application ecosystem.

I'm usually a Windows guy, but got into the Mac ecosystem for my work devices when the choice was between a Mac or a giant boat-anchor of a Thinkpad W-series running linux. For my mother and her husband, they already have iPhones and iPads, so there's a benefit to staying in that ecosystem. Also, they tried going back to the PC route but when they started on Windows 10 and then get upgraded to 11 without knowing it, and the UI is different, and then they run into issues that I end up having to spend time troubleshooting. Yeah, it's a huge benefit to tell them "just get a MacBook" and then if/when they have issues they can show up at the Genius Bar to have them help sort it out.

You're looking at basically the cost of the components going into the device, and basically ignoring everything else that comes along with it. If my parents had to call Dell support in Bangalore for something...holy shit that would be a nightmare.

Unfortunately they never do. I see the 8/512 on sale. But never the 16gb model.
I know, most retailers only carry the low end MBAs. Costco does tend to have higher end systems than other retailers from time to time, so I'll keep hoping for awhile. If not, there's always a sale on the 14" Pro.

Definitely. Most would probably be fine with 8/512 but do not buy one with the 256 hd. On the MBA M1, the 256 had 2 chips, with the M2, it is now only one and much slower.

I don't need the storage as it's a casual computer and we have a 2TB iMac - wouldn't a 16/256 avoid the issue plus have better performance anyway or is that a stupid combo to buy? ETA replacing a 2018 MBP with butterfly keyboard
