My daughter is going to college in the fall, so I picked up the previous deal on the M1 Air for $799 at Costco. Wondering if I should swap that up for this one...similar savings but newer machine.
What are the odds I could pick this up at this price point sometime between now and next fall?

If you're budget allows spending an extra $200 for the M2, if it were me, I'd spend that $200 on either 16GB memory upgrade or 512GB storage on the M1 (if you can find a deal) and get a better machine than what you'd get from just M1 --> M2. Since most things can be put in the cloud for storage, getting 16GB is probably the better choice.

stick with the M1. unless she does heavy video encoding, etc... she wont notice the difference. save the money and keep in mind you got it from costco, which is much easier to return if needed compared to Amazon.

I'm rocking the M1 Air and it's already way too powerful. Just my 2 cents.

For some reason, as of right now, the deal only seems to be for the Starlight and Midnight colors. Silver and Space Gray are showing $1,149 for me.

M2 is not worth the extra $200. M1 is (after 2 years of release) still a fantastic device

I would upgrade to the M2. It has the new design that your daughter likely appreciates more than the performance upgrades.

It's soldered non-upgradeable flash storage, not a HDD, so speed will not be an issue. With these, though, the more total onboard storage the better. The OS and apps will quickly dig into the measly 256. 512 minimum IMHO. 256 is Tim Apple marketing B.S. for the unknowing masses.

Is it normal to see such big discounts on latest gen apple products?
Normally I see little or no discount on new and previous gen models are discounted.

Are they trying to boost sells before recession hits next year or something?

My wife likes M2 in the midnight color. Screen/bezels, case, and magsafe are nice touches. HD speed difference doesn't matter for her work / browsing. We thought it was worth $200 more for it.

M2 one has magsafe, bigger screen, 1080p camera, better speakers and mic, so. But apparently also 1 NAND SSD chip vs 2 in the previous model, which makes it a bit slower.
