The original N64 release had a critical flaw. If you used Shang Tsung and won a round while transformed into someone else it froze the game - every damned time.
Needless to say I was incredibly frustrated by this, they released a revision after the initial release, my release as far as I know was rare. Still think there should have been a program to exchange the cart over that....
Also, anyone know if this is closer to the N64 or Playstation version? It seems like there were quite a few differences. I wasn't a Playstation fan during that era because I hated load times, but it seemed like the Playstation had more characters.

Bought it BTW, I had MK 1-4 already on GOG, so I got the additional $2 off....

Yeah, on release the only two n64 games readily available were mk trilogy and wayne gretzky 3d hockey. Everything else was basically sold out.
Mario 64 and Pilotwings were the only two available at my Electronics Boutique. I got the system 3 days before launch. They were selling the reservation units early. 😈

Playstation
the distinction of the mkt of psx and n64 version is so bizarre. psx shang tsung morph has load time. much more characters including kotaro and goro.
n64 shang tsung, no load time and can turn into shao kahn and motaro. reduce number of characters. in fact, snes umk3 has more character than n64 mkt.
snes umk3 also release later than Saturn/psx umk3. snes umk3 has more character than saturn/psx counterpart but reduce finisher, animality and bability is out. not sure about friendship. snes umk3 added brutality introduced in mkt.
I assume psx/Saturn umk3 is ported or resembled arcade version closely.

Love the history lesson here. I think I've pretty much played or purchased every possible version of old school MK. I don't believe umk3 ever did come out for PSX. Love my Saturn version though. heck even got mk2 for saturn but that one bugs me a little bit.
I had forgotten some of these details. also MKT was my launch 64 title and probably one of my fav games of all time. I was always jealous of the psx version with the classic variant versions of characters though.
Can't disagree with you. A bit silly.
