Kudos for Sony for pushing the bar on the hardware side of imaging and camera phones!

But, that 1" sensor cannot actually be used in a phone that thin. The lens only is able to project light onto a fraction of it. So, you're paying for all cost of R&D and manufacturing of that expensive sensor, but it's impossible to use it…

Are they "splitting" the sensor between different lenses so that the total sensor area is comparable with 1"? I am also confused how they do 1" sensor w/o the depth and lenses big enough to utilize it?

"It doesn't make full use of the sensor's actual size, which explains why output maxes out at 12-megapixels in spite of the 20.1-megapixel images the sensor would otherwise be capable of.

This is significant for a couple of reasons. First, it means the Xperia Pro-I only uses the middle portion of the sensor, possibly to the point of a 1/1.3-inch equivalent, though that's not a confirmed figure. Second, Sony managed to maintain larger 2.4 Micron pixels within that usable space, all but doubling what most other leading smartphones offer right now."

All three Zeiss lenses on the rear of the Pro-I shoot at 12-megapixels with familiar focal ranges. The main lens, which uses the Exmor sensor, is a 24mm equivalent, and the only one that works with the variable aperture. The 16mm ultra-wide uses Sony's smaller 1/2.55-inch IMX363 sensor and fixed f/2.2 aperture. The 50mm telephoto lens uses the 1/2.9-inch IMX486 sensor and fixed f/2.4 aperture. An IMX316 ToF camera rounds out the rear array. Of all those cameras, I could only access the telephoto by zooming from the main lens, as there was no shortcut to it in the camera interface.

The 1" 20MP sensor is used, so the marketing hype is true. However, still images use the center portion of the sensor thus creating a 12MP image. This leaves the large 2.4µm pixels distinguishing it from the competition, because otherwise the effective sensor size and associated optics are actually firmly in existing cell phones (commonly 1/1.31" sensors with 1.2µm pixels).

A shameful gimmick.

Sony is the best in photo sensors but they fail in phones vs Samsung and others. So they are trying real hard to sell this as a camera with the phone around it.

The price point doesn't make much sense - better to buy phone and camera separately with that money.

Sony clearly doesn't want to be in the phone market any more. The R&D was probably rough for this device, and yet still the retail price isn't exactly that far off of their prior flagship phones which didn't have the 1" Exmor sensor. When it's cheaper to buy an actual 1" sensor Sony(!) camera and a competitor's phone you're certainly not chasing relevance.

There was a slim chance of this becoming the next Lumia 1020 but Sony whiffed hard.

There's a lot to like on this phone. It has a lot of storage (512 GB), has a micro SD slot and also a 3.5mm jack. Aside from the big pixel sensor it also comes with pro-tools to actually do a lot of video editing potential. It also helps that it's native 4k 120 fps. The pics come out flat and not overly processed which I prefer. It's a niche product though and most mainstream users won't really take advantage of this. And it overheats a lot when used as a gaming phone.

Probably not. This reminds me their VAIO laptops line before they shut it down. Cool, stylish, but destined to eventually die due to not being competitive at a reasonable price point.
I mean...who in their right mind would pay $1800 for this phone??? Beyond special cases this has no appeal to public to make any volumes to recoup R&D costs.

Glad to see a flagship 4K Phone that has microSDXC support. I was not sure what I will do after / when I have to replace my S20 (last one that had microSDXC ). I do record 4K videos so need microSDXC. My S20 is still strong, so I am good for now.

Only thing that seems to be missing is Face ID / face recognition login. I cannot find it as a Sony feature list that shows it? Why Sony? ...... Why?
