Costco deal at $499 is still better, with the exception of those that do not have a Costco membership.

Still thinking that these might fall another little bit on price because retailers are going to have to firesale everything to make way for newer generation systems - which will drive down the price of everything else further down the supply chain. Just on man's opinion.

If you need to buy right now and your choices are the Costco HP vs the Asus on this post, I'd recommend the Asus.

The HP is going to be pretty unsupportable outside of your HP/Costco warranty (the Costco warranty might be pretty good though). I'd expect the motherboard and maybe the power supply to be proprietary which will limit your ability to upgrade this system. The I7 12700F is a good CPU but I wouldn't be surprised if the cooling solution in this system didn't cause some thermal throttling. That's only an assumption though and if you compare the CPUs at optimal performance, the HP's Intel would outperform this particular AMD CPU overall.

I believe the Asus uses standard parts so you can more easily upgrade and replace parts yourself. The 1660 TI GPU in the ASUS is also much better than the RX 550. While the AMD 3600X CPU isn't as good as the HP's Intel i7 12700F, it'll probably be a better system overall due to better build quality. Plus you can probably upgrade to the 5000 series AMD without upgrading the motherboard. Though if you did need / want to upgrade the motherboard, that will be an option for this Asus.

Based on teardowns I've seen, I would never recommend a system like the HP one here. Maybe the HP Omen would be ok but I would still avoid those too... unless the only other choice was an Alienware desktop.
The CPU on this is significantly better but even then I would get the 500 dollar ASUS. The Ryzen 5 is still a great little CPU but the 1660TI is miles better than the RX550 2gb. Really Old, slower card. Save the $200 and instead buy another stick of RAM and more storage for the 499 ASUS.

Does anyone have thoughts on this computer at Costco instead?

HP Pavilion Desktop - 12th Gen Intel Core i7-12700F - AMD Radeon RX 550 - Windows 11
On sale for $699
https://www.costco.com/hp-pavilio...41386.html

- I'm looking for a simple desktop to replace my ~ 10-year-old computer, which is starting to freeze more and more often. (4th generation i7 - 4770)

Wait for mid September. The Slicksters will be posting the deeper discounted deals as the retailers make room for the newer rigs.

I prefer the cheaper one as the HP one only has a better CPU but poor GPU. For gaming, GPU matters more than HDD plus 8GB more memory.

I'd wait for BF, anything bulky like desktops will have motivated sellers because warehousing prices are going up to keep it longer than its worth. Retail sometimes makes it up on volume of more profitable items they can get up for sale that the less profitable stuff is taking up...

I hate working on HP computers, everything is difficult to get at and they use proprietary parts.

For desktop (not gaming) the HP is better but not $200 better You get extra warranty with Costco as well. This desktop will need 8 GB more ram.
