I was looking at it this morning! The 7040 is on Amazon with 16Gb for $20 more and DDR4.

Dell Optiplex 7040 Business SFF Computer Small Tower PC (Intel Core i5-6500, 16GB Ram, 256GB SSD, DVD-RW, WiFi) Win 10 Pro (Renewed) https://a.co/d/cdnoAzM

I went with the 7040 instead to run blue iris.

Just FYI, the RAM in this is NOT DDR4. It is DDR3. I purchased this last month and ultimately returned it. The optiplex 5040 did not have a DDR4 option.

The 7040 mentioned by the above poster is DDR4, with an addition 8gb of ram for just $20 more. It's a much better deal.

Nice desktop for the money. Same seller has a 7040 similarly outfitted, but with 16GB RAM and wifi, for $140. Not officially Windows 11 compliant, but some solid and pretty fast machines for most tasks. I have a 3040 SFF that I use every day and I love it.

Edit: Looks like y'all found that 7040 and commented on it while I was typing the above message. Sorry I posted a duplicate message about it.

Great little box. I use one with a 1TB SSD as my home ESXi lab. Works great.

I got the 7040's a while back for my PVE servers, they've been totally solid.

Define "better."
I imagine this device would be more performant at the cost of more power usage.

Dell SFFs are my favorite platform for routers. I've thrown dual/quad NICs and PFSense on i3 and i5 Series 3-6 Optiplex's for years and they never break 30-40w even running a bunch of VPN connections. The only real annoyance in mainline models is limited ATA ports, so hard drives are almost always the point of failure. I prefer the series 4 high-tier models like the 9020 for this price, since they have 2x ATA ports (so 2 SSD drives can be easily mirrored), larger RAM capacity, and a little better build quality, at the expense of a slightly older CPU (gen 4 vs gen 6) and no M.2.

If you live by a university check their surplus store, my local university sells these once the warranty is up and similar hp specced models with out the hard drive for $80. $100 will get you an 8th gen pc at surplus.

Dang, I really liked the look of this, but it appears that it is only about 20% faster than my 2 current old I5-3470 based systems. I'm looking for at least a 30% speed increase under $180 each. I do like how many usb ports this has, though.

If I were in the market with a $180 budget, I'd be seriously considering the Acer i3-10105 desktop deal for another $22 at $202. Specs are years ahead of 6th gen (2021 versus 2015), at a compelling price point. I bought one a few weeks ago and it's a lot of bang for the buck, with free upgrade to Windows 11 when you're ready.
