With a jacket like this, the pricing is based on the fact that it's really warm for how light it is and it can be packed down to stow away while hiking, say if you started hiking on a cold morning then it warmed up during your hike.

I normally don't chime in on stuff, but wanted to say that I bought this at 100$ and was satisfied with the warmth (it actually runs a bit warm often in low 60, high 50 weather). Only thing I wish was that there was a hood!

The definition of a deal at REI is anything selling below MSRP. There may be one or two on their website somewhere... if you look really hard.

When I see a tag on anything that states "MSRP $xx.xx" I immediately start looking for the lesser store price. In REI the MSRP tag is their price. Confused

I have the women's version of this jacket (w/ a hood), which is also on sale. Really excellent, versatile jacket. Great for layering and blocking the wind.

Yes You don't want to be identified when flashing so a hood is easier than wearing a balaclava.
