Good deal on this entry level grinder for majority of brewing methods other than espresso. Only passable for espresso. 6 months warranty with Breville remanufactured products. 13 in stock at the time of posting.

The alternative is baratza encore which has better reparability and parts availability. The Breville has more features, its quieter and arguable produces a more consistent grind.

What would this give me over my Breville's Baristo Pro's built-in grinder?

It's comparable to the built in grinder to your barista pro. You definitely shouldn't buy it for espresso.

Edit: my reply above was for @jawad415 because he has a barista pro which has a grinder built in that is similar to smart grinder.

For someone who has no grinder, they can buy this smart grinder as a beginner espresso grinder. Both the smart grinder and the barista express/pro grinder will be okay for espresso. I had the barista express for 5 years and was happy with it. However once I started weighing my dose and playing with ratios and timing I realized that the grinder was somewhat inconsistent and therefore I upgrade to the Eureka Mignon Specialita. I would still recommend the smart grinder or the barista machines to first time buyers.

Does anybody actually fill the hoppers on these things? That one looks huge. All I can think of is "great way to have stale coffee" when I see it.

Got mine new from BBB and it is awesome for espresso. It has more size steps compared to the built-in grinder on my barista touch. Very consistent grind and size.

If one is using a $5K espresso machine, yes, probably want to invest in a better grinder but I don't see why this one isn't suitable for espresso. Each bean is different and requires adjustment of grain and grind time (translates into amount of ground coffee) but this Breville seems reasonable to complement my Rancilio Silvia.

I do fill it. It fits 12 oz bag. 16oz doesn't fit completely. Yes, coffee feels oxidized towards the end but it would be equally oxidized in any other container short of vacuum sealed bag. I go through a 12oz bag of beans in about 10 days.

The biggest issue with this deal is that if you jump through a few hoops, you can buy a new one for the same price.

I got mine for $199 from BBB, minus standard 20% coupon so $160 already. Paid with discounted BBB gift cards so another 20% off. Total price $128 for a brand new one.

I had the OG model for 11 years (before microadjust burr)

Chewed through 500+ lb
Toward the end it was ok for drip coffee and way better than blade grinder but got donated to the parents who were still using a 15$ blade grinder.
plenty of boulders and fines at that point.

Replaced it with a price mistake kitchenaid KCG8433BM for 40$
I doubt it has the longevity but the grind is at least 10x more consistent.
FWIW: I know not an apple to apple comparison.

The breville would be a great buy at 99$ but not sure the value is there at 140 for remanufactured.. not a terrible buy though.

That's a lot of work. I'd take the remanufactured deal.

I recommend a refurbished Baratza Sette. Parts are easily replaceable, sufficient grind settings for espresso, fast, low retention, etc.

Breville now owns Baratza I heard, so just FYI
