Just be aware, I purchased a Optoma UHD50X back in March 2020. Earlier this year it developed a very distracting white dot that displays on the image. Of course the warranty is only 1 year so basically to repair it through Optoma would cost hundreds. I will probably attempt the repair myself but will probably never buy Optoma again.

Trying googling "Optoma white dot" for more information.
Lol I will doubt you, cause I am more experienced than you. Been using projectors for well over 20 years now and only had to replace 1 bulb in my lifetime. I used my projectors as daily drivers so they were on a lot, and even at max output most bulbs lasted almost 4 years. Bulbs only usually fail right at the beginning of ownership cause they are not stress tested when first installed, and the other reason they fail is if you improperly shutdown the projector or experience a power loss while viewing and the bulb cant cool itself off quick enough. They hardly ever fail for any other reason unless you have a defective projector, which like i said you would notice right away.

That being said, you are not wrong that people now need to start looking for LED or Laser projectors as the prices are finally down to earth for most. That does not mean if you can get a very high end bulb projector for a good price you should pass up on it, cause they are still worth it and offer excellent picture and longevity.

ok...maybe a bit too long. This should word for your unit. Fixed in a jiffy.

The Optoma UHD50X is one of the best-selling 4K projectors on the market. However, it is not without its issues. One of the most common complaints about this projector is white dots on the screen......whoops....looks like why I see so many refurbished units.

I got the UHD38 last year at $1399 no tax, which is slightly brighter and overall the same otherwise (I don't remember if it has a built in speaker though - no point to it anyway).

The same exact white pixel issue happened to me. After 3 months it developed white pixels in the middle of the screen. I called optoma and they said I would need to pay to send it to them, they had no estimate but guessed a month turn around with no projector, which I use as my main tv. Luckily I bought the asurion 3 year warranty. I waited till literally a week after manufactures warranty expired and sent to asurion for free. Two weeks later they sent me a check for the full purchase price I paid. Caveat emptor with Optoma.

holy moley, do *not* buy a bulb lamp projector in the age of LED lamp and laser that both last wayyyyy longer. when that bulb pops for the 2nd or 3rd time, when that heat buildup melts your color wheel, polarizer and you get some really bizarre moving blobs on your screen, don't come crying to me! They are a Chernobyl waiting to happen. Don't doubt me!

While I dont have this projector I did read a few reviews on it already. This is the direct upgrade to the UHD50 it has more lumens which makes it great for day time viewing, it has presets for wall color if your using it directly on a colored wall and not a screen. It has double the contrast ratio compared to the UHD50 which gives you better black levels. Also in HD gaming scenarios input lag is a mere 4ms making it one of the best gaming projection options available, 16.9ms for 4k gaming. All this while having an advanced color wheel made for extremely accurate cinema movie reproduction.

The only downside of this projector is that its using a bulb, even though its an arc bulb which is a high end version of a projector bulb. It only has a mono speaker if your planning on only using the projector for your sound. Finally it has no ARC or EARC to use with sound bars.

This is a VERY tempting projector for me since I would use it as a daily driver, right now the main projector I am waiting to become more widely available is the Benq X3000i, it has eARC and also a LED light source, unfortunately compared to this it is way more expensive with a starting price of $2000.

I have not heard of the white dot issue happening on this model compared to the UHD50 as another poster mentioned so hopefully thats all worked out. Really close to pulling the trigger.

I believe this projector only has HDMI 2.0 ports, so 4k60hz is highest you can get for gaming.

You are 100% correct, the review on projector reviews had one area where it compared it to 3 chips and i misunderstood their wording, I had to go into the users manual but it confirmed no 4K120hz only 4K@60hz.

My mistake, editing it out of the main reply to not cause confusion.

It seems like every time I think about a projector I talk myself out of it. In this case the anti-bulb/heat generator folks have a point, but also it's not even native 4K but rather pixel shifting. Also only one Amazon review for this. Going laser plus native 4K you're looking at $5000-6000 minimum. Next, apparently to benefit from either 4K you need a 4K compatible screen which runs anywhere from $1000 minimum to $8000 for 80-120" screens. So maybe about $3000 minimum all-in for this plus a 4K screen plus projector mount?

Instead why not just buy a good true 4K LED TV 85-86" for $1300-2000 and forget about projector bulbs, mounting distances, ambient light problems, etc.? Genuinely looking for someone to change my mind.

I can think of 2 arguments:
1) Bigger screen size for the price at 100"+. Problem is, with standard 8' ceilings most folks have, you're limited to about a 100" screen size to have the recommended 1' above and 3' space below. Is the extra 14" really worth the projector downsides?

2) 3D. This is a good argument for me because I do enjoy 3D content and projectors seem to be the only option now. However, since 3D for TV's is pretty much dead, will we continue to even find 3D movies/games at home?

Isn't the white dot the eventual nature of DLPs?? I remember fixing a rear-projection DLP TV by buying a new chip. This is why I only prefer EPSON, Sony or JVC.
