Yes this is particularly good. If I was still in the Panasonic ecosystem it would be an instant buy

This is a better deal, IMHO. You get a more complete kit for $300 more. S5, 20-60mm + 85mm lens.

Both are good deals but neither is better. It's up to you if you want that lens or not

Thoughts on this as a starter FF camera for someone already in the Panasonic m43 ecosystem with many m43 prime and zoom lenses?

I was not really looking for a new system - especially having to buy all new FF lenses, but I would like to improve still image quality indoors and in low light mostly, assume this is much improved low light and shallower DoF if wanted? Any other plus / minus items?

Same boat here. I like the dynamic range, but what I really dislike about FF is the size of the lens, the cost of the lens, and the mediocre stabilization for video.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

Don't buy if you plan on using auto focus for video. You will just wind up with blurry content and a lot of hunting.

I use the S5 in conjunction with the dinky Lumix GX85 (not even G85) at times and I'm astounded by the image quality out of the smaller MFT camera. With some nice lenses you don't need much more. However, other things you mentioned such as lowlight performance and such may be a big improvement over what you're using.

The S5 is an amazing camera for photos and video (if you don't need autofocus; and for most applications I would not want AF). If you can sell your MFT collection or use it as a secondary camera, the S5 will serve you well. I don't have this 85mm lens. A good 24-70mm like the Sigma will be all you need, and you get some primes as you deem necessary.

EDIT: Also, regarding improved DoF, you won't necessarily see a big jump there. It really depends; you should look up FF vs MFT in that regard for the nuances.

Hi. I hope anyone can help me here. I sell watches on eBay. I need a camera that can take high detail pictures that often are seen in reviews and videos. Can anyone recommend me if this is fine, overkill or do I need something different.

This is definitely a good camera, but it is also video focused - something you really dont need. You need something with high megapixels so you can zoom in on the photo, crop it down, without losing the resolution. I also recommend looking at macro lens. Above all, you need to invest in quality lighting. check out some quality product soft boxes. invest in lights, and play around with it.

if you dont know what you want. I wouldn't buy this. treat your camera how you would buy and sell watches: research research research.

I own two S5's and I don't regret my decision one bit. The autofocus is not near as bad as some people make it out to be. I use mine for print in a local magazine and commercial projects. Solid deal!

I bought this Camera when it came with the 20-60mm kit lens and the 85mm 1.8 was included free and have used it on a professional level for videography and photography for live music events for a couple of months now. It was a toss-up between this and the GH6 for me, as the prices were similar and I already had a Lumix G7, but ended up going with the S5 for the full frame sensor as a lot of what I shoot is very low light. The dual ISO and IBIS in this are amazing and I have absolutely no buyer's remorse, and supplemented the two lenses with the 70-300mm for telephoto shots at festivals. I absolutely love everything about it except for sometimes the face detect is questionable, usually only really bothering me during lower light video shooting with AF on. This is a VERY good photo and video camera, and the sensor is phenomenal. The size is relatively small, definitely larger than the G7 but not by much, and certainly not as large as a Canon, but still features an excellent grip. The out-of-body audio is totally useable and surprised me, and the IBIS feels like I'm using a gimbal. If you're on the fence I'd say pull the trigger, I love the S5!

I disagree, the video functionality and options aren't as robust as something like the GH6 which has a lot more options and is definitely video-focussed with passive cooling. This is excellent for both, and can do 60fps in 4K (or 5.9k with an external Ninja) but it's also fantastic for photography. In fact if video is your thing go with the gh6, if you want better low-light functionality and better bokeh/depth of field and a MUCH larger sensor go with this.
