I am in market for a NAS (first time buyer) and this seems to be overall better specs/capable compared to DS220+ I am interested in. My main use case is PLEX+Photo editing and general storage (computer backups).

I understand there are other expenses for extra RAM and disks but should I get something like this or wait for sale on DS220+ (or 720/920+)

Any suggestion on what would be a good buy for my use case ?

Synology software is definitely better and more secure. This QNAP model is 4 years old at this point.
New Synology products will be released this year. I wouldn't spend my hard earned cash on a product that's 4 year old at this point. Either buy one of the newer models or wait a bit for them to go on sale.
Synology 220+ came out in 2020.. and they should have 222+ coming out this year. 218+ came out in 2018.. so this tells you how their release cycle works.

I have been using Synology for years. They're more expensive than QNAP, but as others will point out the software & security is much better and the software is really what you are paying for. QNAP is attractive because their specs are better for the same or less money, however, for something like a NAS, I'm sticking with the known quantity.

This NAS is from 2020. You may be confusing it with an older model.

I have a different QNAP model for a couple of years and have no problems with it. I also bought this one for extra storage. For the price, the specs and performance are hard to beat.

You can check out this review from Storage Review below:
https://www.storagereview.com/rev...nas-review

You should ask yourself, what will I do with my NAS? For most people, QNAP provides more than enough features and security. If you're a networking expert or sys admin, you may want something more advanced, but that is not most people.

I am also in market for NAS drive. First time buyer. However I was wondering if buying NAS drive is better or building our own using nextcloud? I haven't reached to conclusion yet. Still need to research and find out the advantage. But if anyone has experience then please feel free to give input.

This was launched Jan 2020 so it's 2 years and 8 months old.

I have owned a different QNAP for a few years and bought this one on sale from Amazon. I like having a "pre-made" NAS device, and it's convenient and has many features and reliable software. It works well for me.

The main question is, what do you want? If you want a DIY project, maybe these are not right for you. If you want something that does RAID 1, can safely backup your stuff, and has a web server and many automation features, perhaps the QNAP is a better bet. It works out of the box with no fuss. For me, that's a positive.

Would prefer one with 3 bays so that I can do RAID 5.

Though one could argue that it may be cheaper to just get 2 4TB drives and do RAID 1 (4TB total) than get 3 2TB drives to get 4TB RAID 5.

I don't like to complicate things, so I use RAID 1. But either a 2 bay or 4 bay account for most of the consumer NAS devices.

I just got around to setting up my QNAP TS-253D from a previous deal. You definitely do get more bang for your buck with QNAP, the software packages do not seem to be polished. For example, some as simple as the music player doesn't work for me all the time.

On a separate note, I installed a 14TB drive that i schucked from an external WD drive and the NAS itself is noticeable loud when it is operating and would not recommend installing in an area like your living room since the noise can be bothersome.

I have the J4025 version of this I picked up last year when it went on sale at the egg. I went to microcenter for a price match (which they did). Maxed the memory and have loved using it for my plex storage to this day. I don't use the remote features, only use it to run a few containers and video storage. Works great for that.

Interesting. My current QNAP uses two "regular" 5900 RPM 4 GB drives in RAID 1, and I can never hear it over my PC. Even with the PC off, it's quiet. I guess that the drives are loud, but it could be your unit. Maybe it's worth testing it with other drives to see what happens.

I bought the QNAP from Amazon that I posted here. I'm setting it up soon. I'm curious if it will be any louder than the one I already have.
