i already have the pioneer bookshelves with the built-in atmos for my rears, but i'm wondering if it would be worth switching them the sony bookshelves with atmos add-on modules that i'm currently using for the fronts, and just taking the atmos modules and plopping them on top. i do have a separate sub though.

Jamo is calling it a 3 way speaker (woofer, midrange, tweeter). I could be wrong, but I think that single driver firing opposite of the woofer/tweeter side is probably getting a full range signal, making this a quasi bipolar design, which has fallen out of favor. It was big in the 90's/early 2000's because it made a more diffuse sound. You'd have to look at the crossover to see exactly what signal is being sent to the lone driver on the opposite side. Alternatively you could dampen the sound coming out of one side of the speaker (lay it face down on a soft pillow), run a full frequency sweep and measure the signal coming out of the driver/drivers that aren't being damped. If there's no midrange "dip" on the tweeter/woofer side, it's most definitely a bipolar speaker.
