From the spotify page it appears that this is just a spotify remote in essence for your phone. You connect Car Thing via bluetooth to your phone. Then it just says "hook up your phone to your vehicle's audio system however you normally connect it" (bluetooth, usb cable, aux cable). The Car Thing adds no connectivity to your vehicle it simply allows for a different interface rather than having to use your phone directly to control spotify
Good price based on what? The fact it's 1/3rd of the price they originally tried to flog it for, but quickly discovered nobody would pay, so they killed it and then held a fire-sale to get rid of their excess stock?

Reviews are at best mediocre. It's a dead product so it's not going to better. It requires Spotify Premium to work. It's locked down and nobody has managed to hack it to work with other apps.
I'm dying to know the back story on Car Thing. Spotify surfaced rumors in 2018, but then they took until 2021-2022 to actually market it. Why the delay on a device that seems perfect for... 2010?

That said, after doing an absurd amount of research on this absurd device, I always said I wouldn't pay $80 for this...maybe I'd pay $20-30? So here we are.

This is a decent two-week usage review: https://www.engadget.com/spotify-...52796.html

Good detailed video review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6nbRfOaFUI Kinda funny that he mentions it might be good positioned in the back seat if you're an Uber driver.

Some benefits to it:

Seems like a well-made device, structurally?
Physical, tactile buttons and knobs are easier and safer to control than touchscreens while driving, IMO
If you put a podcast on a preset button, it'll fetch and play the latest episode when you press that button.
You can have GPS navigation on your phone's screen and Spotify music on this device. Although...then you're gonna have two screens mounted while driving.
I guess the Hey Spotify voice control works pretty well, and you can even control some settings by voice (like assigning a preset)
It's got aux
No battery, so it should fire up when you start the car and turn off when you turn off the car. This is nice, because lots of bluetooth adapters for older cars have a crazy 8-12 hour battery, and you'll find your phone connecting to them while you're in your house, hours after you got out of your vehicle.
Biggest sell for me: I ... love? weird, niche, abandoned devices? Maybe love is a strong word. But I had a Moto Z with those silly mods (like the car mount!) for years.

Cons:

it needs to connect to your phone...it's literally just a second screen
the display has some lag.
No EQ
Volume dial is digital in steps from 0-10.
When you show this off to them, your friends, wife, or others will ask "....Why?"

How do these work in vehicles? If I have USB ports in my back seats could these be used to have a passenger in the back control the music?

My old car does not have Apple car play. I thought this have some related functionality, but no.

Is there any such similar device for car play ?

Looked into this and decided against it. I have a pretty old car and just use one of the Bluetooth to fm transmitters, which works well. The song doesn't pop up on the radio screen that way. I don't see how it's a big upgrade on car mode, especially if your commute isn't super long. If you have a newer car, it probably does this anyways and it's one more thing for a car thief to see.

It pairs with your phone through Bluetooth, so yes, a passenger in the back could use it.

I think it's because this is basically a dead product. Spotify has stopped selling them, so you'll only get support while they "care" to provide it.

Which one are you using?
I've tried a few, and they all sucked big time for me. Even highly-rated (on Amazon) Nulaxy ones. The only one which works well for me is a Walmart Onn-branded one. But it's by far the biggest and the fugliest of all the ones I tried. I am still looking for a smaller / better looking one which works weel.

"It's a good price". Sure, if you can use it. How many people do you know who pay for Spotify premium?
90% of my friends and family have Spotify premium. Are you still using limewire to download music or something?
