Nope- the 5600x will perform better in many games, often by a significant amount. If the processors were freeways, the 5600x would be a 6-lane with a 60 MPH speed limit, while the 3900x would be a 12-lane highway with a 45 MPH speed limit. Most gaming traffic (the data being processed) benefits more from a higher speed limit rather than more lanes (# of cores), even if the 3900x has more overall throughput. More contemporary games are getting better at using more cores, but but you have no reason to switch here given your stated use case.

You'd be killing it. $300 on the bay, after fees you would probably lose money

which ATX board to buy for this cup?
If you're going pcie 3.0 for storage/gpu then b450. If you're going pcie 4.0 for storage or GPU and don't heavily use USB devices then b550 (pcie 3.0 for USB). If you use USB devices heavily then b570 (pcie 4.0 on usbs). I'd go b550 if it was me, there's been some refurbs on woot for around 80$ lately

Very good analogy. I have 5950x to fit in your scenario, in this case how many lanes at what speed for 5950x?
12 lanes going 70, with a bike lane on each side.

Not really..
normal CPU: cars need to make U-turn if cache is missed
3D cache CPU: cars less likely to make U-turn
result: more actual useful trips

5xxx , 6xxx and 7xxx series (also intel 12th gen) also do more intelligent handing of work loads called optimization.. AMD and intel like to call it AI... but its what gets from point A to B faster ultimately using less wattage and increasing instructions completed per second.

If I didn't already have 3900x for a server/nas and two 5900x's from an Amazon screwup, I would be all over this.

3900x never got enough love when it came out imo. Absolutely fantastic CPU for dev workloads. Can't even tell I'm running VM's most of the time.
I love my 3900X. Just upgraded my 2080TI to a 3080. Enjoying every bit of it.

Hmm.. I have a ASRock AB350 Pro4 running a Ryzen 7 1700 I bought in 2017 and it seems like it actually can handle a 3900x. I was thinking about just building a new computer after the new amd cpus come out but with a 3900x I could probably get a few more years out of the rest of the system.

Edit: Oh you can't even reserve it online? That's kind of a PITA.

3900x is still more than enough for almost any task, hell even 3700x is enough for gaming

By the way Amazon Warehouse deals have used 3900xt for 324.15 - 20% = $259.32 . Not a new one, but easy to return and available for shipping.

Great explanation, what would a 12700k be?
