It always amazes me when a deal gets FP then comes back for the same price or a few bucks more and gets no love. 😭

I bought one last time around. Very nice looking brand new unit, I thought it was a great deal. It didn't even boot to Windows. Kept power cycling forever. At least it failed immediately and not after a few months of use, causing loss of data. Junk!

Now you have me worry! My wife and I only have $2k budget to donate school supply this year and we were happy to order 10 of this from local BB today. ( there was no actual unit on display at Bellevue WA store, so we dont know how bad it is ) Any other recommendation? we would prefer new machines though?

p.s. sales tax is 10.1% here.

You could wait for the Asus 14" to go to $99.99 again ram and storage are half the size but they come with 1 year of office/Microsoft 365 personal too. They keep going to $99.99 every week or two it seems.

I think the pentium quad cores gonna be better than the Celeron dual core but the Asus is pretty solid and for school kids the year of office outweighs the CPU comparison IMHO. It's a $70 value on a $100 laptop. They will ideally use the laptop's to learn and not play Roblox lol. Asus build quality is also superior but if you don't get a lemon the Geo definitely has better specs for the additional $80.

The 8GB of RAM in this machine makes all the difference. I bought it for my dad a month or so ago. It runs perfectly for his needs. His previous machine had enough CPU power but 4GB of non upgradable RAM and was horrifically slow. It was one of those $119/$99 specials. Windows takes around 4GB just to sit on the desktop.

This is a solid value.

Thank you gentlemen! While I am very handy with PC/ OS tweaking, especially MS system, I would definitely prefer name brand + RAM/ HD self-upgrade. Is there other options that I could have minimum of 8GB ram machine?

Unfortunately, I really don't have much to spend, maybe extra 10%~15% max. Frown

Not to discount your good deed and effort, but you may be better off getting better $300 laptops and making six kids happy than buying 10 of these and making almost no one satisfied.

There is a Best Buy review from someone with two bootlooped of these. And matching the performance of a 15-year-old EEK! server CPU or a 9-year old laptop CPU is not a huge feat.

Very valid point! List of 10 kids were provided by school and I am really pulling my hair ( not many left ) trying to get other parents to "chip in", where they going for school bag, clothes, books and papers..
10 laptops will delivered tomorrow to my place first, I am really really anxious / worry as well..

Intel Core i7-7Y75 @ 1.30GHz
Intel Core i5-5350U @ 1.80GHz
Intel Xeon X5460 @ 3.16GHz
The N5030 is an incredibly efficient and modern Atom-based CPU. This deal in fact triggered an alert I'd set for slightly newer Jasper lake Atom CPUs as those have been game-changers in the chromebook space. However, as a platform for running Windows Atom CPUs still remain something worth avoiding and this is highlighted by the comparisons above.

The Xeon X5460 on this list really doesn't meaningfully belong here since that CPU technology sounds better than it was (i.e. - Xeon means this beats a SERVER!). The Xeon X5460 model rolled out in 2007 and is the Xeon equivalent of the Core2 Quad series (so an equivalent retail CPU would be around a Core2 Quad Q9650). These CPUs are still functional (I still daily drive a Core2 Quad system as my media playback PC for my projector) but also haven't been new in retail for over a decade. In fact, the Core2 Quad is the last four-core, non-low power/mobile i-series CPU with which the N5030 competes horsepower wise. A first-generation i5 should crush these numbers (note that four-core i3 models didn't appear until the 8th generation).

The N5030 is definitely a miracle of engineering for accomplishing in 6 Watts what used to require 90 Watts. That doesn't make it a recommendable machine for running Windows as a primary PC.

The rest of the CPUs on the list are all low-power (even lower than the N5030 in most cases), dual-core i-series CPUs. The dual core i-series budget CPUs, particularly the ultra-low power Y and U models, have consistently proven to lack the longevity of their 4-core counterparts as operating systems and applications have become increasingly capable of supporting multiple threads/cores (even browsers today leverage both!).

This system may be functional for some users, and advanced users may have some optimized applications for such a PC, but otherwise I'd recommend dumping the Passmark comparison as validation of the day-to-day usefulness of this laptop. An interesting footnote, but especially considering the selection of CPUs a potentially misleading one.

Good luck!
Jon

This has a TN panel rather than an IPS panel, just a heads-up.

In the category of affordable (<$200) fanless laptops, this is about the best you'll do in terms of performance for something that's in New condition (excluding 2-in-1s like the Surface).

Any reason to not just get cheap chromebooks instead of Windows laptops? My nephews school does this.

Unless they need Windows software, if they're just doing stuff online, Chromebooks are much more capable with lesser hardware.
