I use mine as a watch, Apple Pay for shopping, notifications from calls and messages, garage door opener, weather checker.

Yeah pretty much. It has some basic health functions like steps, heart rate, etc. but the integration with iPhone apps is solid and Apple Wallet is excellent. It's a modest quality of life improvement and not so much a pure utilitarian purchase (at least for me).

As you note... different use cases. This is for my child. He has been using a refurbished Watch 3, since 1st grade. The battery life has never been great. He is not ready to carry a cellphone, so the cellular option is best for us. With the random violence in schools, this is my safety blanket. Sad, but true. Also, he likes it. We have moved to the Apple ecosystem and think this works best for us. Probably wait 'til Christmas to give it to him.

Hello, my daughter is in 5th grade and I have the same use case as you. Just few questions if you can help. How to buy cellular plan for the watch. Will it be same number as me or a different line? Ours is Verizon plan, but don't have space (max 10 lines) to add a new line. Can I buy a different carrier like t-mobile for the watch and link to my cellular that is Verizon?

I can't be of much help, since I am using Xfinity mobile. His current watch is linked to an old iPhone with a separate phone number (required for Apple watch 3). Newer Apple watches support use on an existing parent's phone. I haven't used this, but not all carriers support this. I have also read that there is at least one MVNO with a $10 monthly plan, but I cannot remember which one. If you figure this out, let us know.

Bought 2 SE watches last week for my kids as well (6th & 4th graders) for same use case directly from Tmobile since it was 50% off with new line.

According to the Apple site, when you select the GPS+cellular versions supported by ATT, Vzn, & Tmobile, there is no selection of carrier. You will get another phone # but need to setup the watch on your iPhone for start up.

You need an iphone to set it up. You can use the watch without the iphone, but need for initial set up. Pretty pointless though, since the apps and connectivity to the phone is what makes it worth the price. You can get comparable watches for much cheaper if you don't want to use an iphone.

Are you an iPhone user? I have a Fitbit Versa and it often disconnect and will not get any app notifications. When working, it's great as while I wear the Versa mostly for HR and step count, it's nice to get messages as well as eTrade alerts. I'm considering getting an apple watch but I had a 6th gen and it was too heavy and needing to charge it daily has turned me off compared to how light the Versa is and battery good for 5 days.

Cellular had great kids use cases. I also use cellular to leave phone at home and go running with Spotify, Runkeeper and phone calls.

It becomes a mp3 and phone assistant

You can piggyback the watch to your phone for $10/mo or you can make the watch a new device with its own number, but that incurs a separate device plan ($$$). Most people do the former, but the latter works if you want you kid to truly have their own device, but without all the pesky internet junk distracting them. Both require activation fees of $35.

We're considering it for my 6th grader, but so far I haven't activated it yet and haven't needed to.

The cellular versions can still call 911 even without a plan attached.
