I've played RTS before like StarCraft, Warcraft, C&C, and Dune II, but never Homeworld. Which of the Homeworld games should I start on?
Definitely start with Homeworld 1. The story actually matters.

After that, the story is less important though since it really told everything it needed it.

I've never played Starcraft. But this holds up to C&C and Age of Empires just fine. It feels MUCH more natural being RTS too. Most games seem to create a weird artificial world. Homeworld's RTS system just makes sense, from a realistic standpoint. For example, what does "advancing through ages" actually mean? Why do I start at the "Stone Age" every new map in Age of Empires? Homeworld isn't like that.

Homeworld 1 is a prime example of why games should be considered an art form.

You never played StarCraft?

It's a must play if you are into RTS! You play Starcraft, I play Homeworld!!! 😆

Just to make sure, I should play it in this order then:

1. Homeworld 1 as part of Remastered
2. Homeworld 2 as part of Remastered
3. Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak?
4. Homeworld: Emergence?

Deserts of Kharak happens before homeworld 1, but it's a totally different game. It's land based with vehicles whereas the other three are in space

Quick question - does anyone know if the GOG or Steam version requires internet connection to work? This is starting to become a bit of an issue with individuals using SteamDecks.

I enjoyed Cataclysm more than the original or 2. Wish they did remaster that

Loved playing this game on my iMac (steam version) until I updated past Mojave, where Apple dropped support for 32-bit apps. Beware… Microsoft may do the same some day. So! Play this now while you can! Music is great, the 3D playing field takes a bit of getting used to but is wholly unique, and the art style helps it mostly age gracefully. I had a lot of fun!

Also, StarCraft II is free to play, if you didn't know… you can play the whole first "game" (human campaign), the most up to date PvP content, the custom games of Arcade (and make your own), and play all the different CoOp commanders. The only things to pay for are the expansion campaigns (Zerg and Protoss to complete the story, and the Nova hero-style missions), voice announcers, and custom unit skins. It really is a magnificent gaming gift, mechanics and responsiveness feel smoother and more modern than even Age of Empires 4, despite the core engine and story launching in 2010. Still a lot of players and tournaments all over the world!

Many of SCII and Warcraft III's developers left Blizzard to form Frost Giant games, I'm really looking forward to their first game Stormgate, which will be a fresh RTS to build on the lessons learned from SCII.

I'm actually not a fan of RTS. I prefer turn-based. That said, I still love Homeworld.

I agree that Starcraft is probably the most important one in the entire genre. I think I own Dune on Gog. I'm familiar with RTS games, but Civilization and Heroes of Might and Magic are the series that have used up the most time for me, by a WIDE margin.

If you'd consider Homeworld 3, Homeworld 1 [Remastered] is definitely worth your time.

Unfortunately, Dune II and even two other games released later that are all not on GoG. Apparently, the rights for it is difficult, since it is held by two parties, the publisher and the IP owner that may not get along.

There is a new Dune RTS on Steam early access though.

Nevermind, I don't have it through GoG. It's an old version copied to my hard drive that has to run on ScummVM.
